we get paid royalties if the whole library is licenced. even if our track isn't used.

Hey Vikki, that's not necesarily true. I know with the library I'm in that blanket licenses, I only get paid when tracks are actually used and that is in the form of back end PRO royalties. The business model is based on being able to off a finanically attractive price to the TV folks partly by not sharing license fees with composers.
With the model I'm referring to, the benefits are (1) Greater chance of placement and hence resume credits and (2) PRO royalties which can really add up. I know people who have gotten some fat ASCAP or BMI checks this way.

Unfortunately Casey is right. I have a few songs with a couple of libraries that don't pay anything upfront. Any payment comes from performance royalties (BMI) only. Of course if there is a lot of airplay, then you get some nice checks, but if it turns out to be corporate videos or the like, then you don't see much of anything.

Thanks Gus...
Would it then be safe for me to assume that this is a pretty good deal.. given that this is a Major cable network?

KO: If it's targeted for television it's a good deal, def... I have music on 4 cable shows and one network show through a library that does blanket licensing.
Gus: I don't think there is as much blanket licensing for the corporate video market as for TV. The volume that TV shows are looking for is much greater than a company doing a video. TV productions have to chose a lot of music so blanket licensing a whole catalog for unlimited use makes sense.
