Hello All -

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but it seems business-end. I am wondering how and/or if you all keep track of your submissions? I was thinking of putting together a spreadsheet to keep track of when I submitted it, when it was forwarded or returned, when (if?) I get contact with the client...

What kind of system do you all us?

Look at your submission history on your TAXI page. TAXI has your entire history of submissions, listings, critiques etc. all ready for you to access.

Yeah, I saw that. I didn't know if they kept that info there for ever, or if it went away after awhile.

Also, I wonder if it might prove useful to have something more accessible and searchable locally. Just wondering.

My submission history goes back to April 2007, which is when TAXI started using it's own system for submissions.

Hopefully, if they pull the plug on this feature we will have ample notice to gather all the data.

A harder part of the process is keeping track of who signed your tracks to their library. THEN you need a spreadsheet!!

Ah, yes. That is what I was thinking about. I remember Matt saying something about keeping track of submissions, but what he must have said was once you signed a deal, keeping track of it that way.

Great subject! I wonder about this too, not really used to pull in the business end of things..

I don't keep track of submissions inside or outside of Taxi. I do the write, submit, forget... repeat mantra. For me at least, it keeps me moving ahead rather than wondering what happened to this or that... not much I can do about submissions that never really got any traction.

For library stuff I have the contracts and schedule A's (the list of music for each library) in one place and I have taken Matto's good advice of not submitting music to other places once it's been signed somewhere. I kind of treat every deal as "exclusive"... much easier that way and I don't have to worry about having the same track in multiple places under a rafter of different names.

Now... I think there's definitely room for me to improve on all that. Not long ago I wanted to gather up my "orphan" tracks (unsigned) and it was a bit of an ordeal to go through everything and arrive at a list of unsigned tracks. Would have been much easier to keep a list of all music with some kind of reference to who its signed to so it would be accessable at a glance. Also it would be handy to have that list also include the retitled name of the track.

So anyway... if you don't do a whole lot of organizing it probably won't be the end of the world. I do the least and it's sometimes a distraction but not a problem. I could do better and that's probably what I'd recommend... making a simple list but not getting too involved with it.

Thanks for all the info. I think I will put together either a spreadsheet or a small database file (like in Bento) and see where it leads. I would be happy to share what I put together if anyone is interested.

I have one spreadsheet that includes everything. I keep track of how much time I spend each day and week doing different things or tasks which includes writing, tweaking audio, listening, researching things about the business, maintenance, goals which also includes how many tracks I'm going to write along with a completion date and how many I'll submit. The whole thing. If I don't have a listing that is coming up I still have a goal for completing a given track. That sort of thing. I have lots of small goals that add up to bigger goals. I try to stay on track but I'm not perfect. But keeping track of what I have submitted for just kind of falls right in line and so I don't really have problem with keeping up with that.
