Library Placement Question

Hi all,
I was contacted yesterday by a music library via a Taxi forward. They told me that they are non-exclusive so I can list the same music I list with them with someone else. My question is, say I have a song with this non-exclusive company, and another exclusive company wants to sign that song. Is that going to throw a wrench in the works with the exclusive company? Am I setting myself up for a potential headache down the road?
This non-exclusive company seems to be very reputable and looks to have a lot of cool placements. Am I over thinking this?

The rule of thumb from what I’ve been hearing is that it’s best to treat the non-exclusive libraries the same as exclusive libraries. Because if both libraries pitch the same song to the same to the same music supervisors, then that is when the headache really begins!

You can NOT enter an exclusive agreement on a track if there are outstanding non-exclusive agreements. That doesn't mean you shouldn't enter a non-exclusive if it's a good library with a track record. You just need to be aware of the limitation. For the most part (I'm sure there are exceptions), a solid bird in the hand trumps a "what if".

Thanks for the feedback guys. I figured there have been posts on this subject.......guess I was just too lazy to look it up

I think I'm going to approach this library as if they were an exclusive library. They said that they like an artist to have a big catalog (I'm assuming they mean music

). But I think I will try to keep my stuff separated as much as possible.......it'll give me an excuse to write even more.

The question you're asking is:
I met this cute girl who wants to go out with me, I'd her to be my girlfriend. Now, if I later meet the woman of my dreams, can I marry her and still keep seeing this girlfriend, as long as me and the girlfriend are not exclusive??

Well, in certain parts of Utah perhaps, but generally...exclusive means exclusive...

If the company has a good reputation and the contract looks good to you, I say sign it.

I don't get the whole polygamy thing anyway.... What man could drive a car with 4-5 wives all telling him what to do? Jeeeees....

not to contradict anybody here and especially not Matto, Mazz and Cat Herder because I can see the wisdom of exclusivity but I was contacted by (I'm guessing) the same library as Peeyo last night so I ran it by an LA based super that I know and he said:

"libraries are fine only if
1) the deal is non exclusive
2) you get the lion's share of the license fee paid by the film/tv people and they only take a percentage..
3) you keep power of attorney"

This is the first time I have heard "power of attorney" come up...anybody know what that amounts to?

It means you can approve/disapprove every placement. No library that's gonna make you actual money is gonna let you do that, because it basically makes it impossible for them to do business.
I hope that music supervisor has a huge personal collection of music or can write his own in a pinch, cause he's gonna have a hard time finding music libraries that adhere to his 'standards'.
