ASCAP and Germany Music Library
Hi Taxi!I signed on with a Music Library located in Germany about a year ago. At the time, they wouldn't accept tracks that were registered with a PRO, other than the one they use in Germany. Now, they're accepting tracks from all PROs. I'm wondering if I should now register (ASCAP is my PRO) the 30 or so tracks I've previously submitted to this library, even though they've been in circulation for a while now. Either way, I plan to register all the tracks I send them from this point on.Thanks,Tim from Somerset, WI

Re: ASCAP and Germany Music Library
Hi Tim.This PRO-thing is constantly 'bugging' me too! I'm with the Danish PRO called KODA, and I seem to get conflicting messages about whether or not I should ALSO join one of the US PROs to recieve royalties for airplay in the US and other countries outside of DK. The Danish KODA tells me NOT to join any other, since THEY are supposed to report airplay to DK. However, it doesn't seem to work well, since I don't get any royalties (or hardly any) from airplay outside of DK...and I know my music gets pretty good airplay around the world.I am wondering if I should join a US PRO too....or if that would just mess up things even more? I just have the 'feeling' that BMI/ASCAP etc. 'forget' to report back to overseas countries. Thanks for starting this. I hope someone can enlighten us!?

Re: ASCAP and Germany Music Library
I tried to join one of the US pros a while ago and both advised me that because I don't reside in the States, I can't join (however, I am affiliated with ASCAP through my Canadian PRO, SOCAN). OTOH, I have heard of people outside of the States joining a US PRO. So I am confused

I'm far from expert in these matters, but I don't see how registering the tracks you've already placed can hurt you. It theoretically possible for the German library to license the tracks to a US production, in which case ASCAP would be involved, yes?

Composers/publishers in the US who have music in other countries would be paid by that country's PRO through ASCAP. You only need to be a member of one PRO.
