Hi all, I have a pretty good sized catalog of songs that i'm in the process of recording properly (or @ least trying to)I do melancholy pop stuff and heavier dark rock songs.I also write & record instrumentals occasionally.my main goal is submitting to libraries etc. and was wondering if I should focus more on my pop stuff,instrumentals or heavier rock tracks.in other words what type of tracks do YOU have more success with.thanks..jp

I would just listen to what is being used on TV and Film if thats the type of stuff you want to write. Remember a song with lyrics can be an instrumental as well if you mute the vocal. If you look at the library listings, you can also gauge what they are looking for.

If you spend just 1 hour listening to the music that's on TV, you'll notice that there are SO many styles that are being used, you really don't have to worry about what type you should work more on, but rather concentrate on your strongest abilities.I talk to a couple of different libraries each month to see if there is anything in particular that they need, and it's always the same answer. "We need everything". Also like mark said "you're lyrical songs can also be set up as instrumental ".

I think this doesn't really matter. what matters is the quality of your music at the end of the day, and that it's appealing for the respective market. both pop and heavy rock are used often in various markets.so I'd say: simply start with the style(s) that you can produce on a high level now. of course you can always try out / learn new styles etc.hthmartin

Always bounce an instrumental version for all of your vocal songs. Libraries will want both versions. 1) so they can mix between them and remove the vocal when needed (like under dialogue) and 2) because they can place the instrumental by itself too.

Be sure to structure you songs for library use as well - don't write 30 second intros, etc. You can use any style of music for libraries, just be sure the music supports an emotion well. You can always post them up on the board and get feedback from us before submitting them to listings as well.

You might do that (replace a vocal with an instrumental melody) for an instrumental only listing, but I think Dean is talking about a vocal song that's been signed-they'll want a version with the vocal out for editing purposes.
