ASCAP got a face-lift

They have a new Members Access, seems like it will be easier to keep track of things!Earnings prior to Nov 2009 are not viewable though.I have yet to receive a check yet but I've discovered that one of my libraries has registered 26 of my songs, so that's pretty cool, hopefully that's a sign that a check will indeed find it's way to my mailbox one of these days!ascap.com

This is cool. I immediately logged in and checked it out. I have a question about my music that is registered with them. I saw a bunch of music registered with them that I must have done a long time ago when I was doing concert music a lot which I had really forgotten about, that was cool. But I didn't see any of the new stuff there that I have signed with a couple of libraries over the past year. I was kind of under the impression that the library was going to register these as the publisher. Is that true? Or should I get all these registered myself? My information for this comes from a recent signing that is exclusive, all the others were non-exclusive, and that library specifically said that they would do the registering and requested that we didn't. But for the 18 other pieces that are signed non-exclusively to these other places, should I go and register the pieces? Not sure what the right approach is with this part of the business. Thanks,B

Hey Brian, not exactly sure, but I think if the libraries are retitling your songs they should be registering them for you under the new name.I would just contact them and see what's goin' on.

Cool. Thanks for the heads up Marc. I guess you have to activate the Access accounts. Did you activate both your writer and publisher accounts?Bryan, if the library re-titles, they will (and need to) register the song for you. I never do it myself, unless I want to register it under the original title for some reason .. maybe I placed it on my own somewhere else ... or maybe I want to 'protect' the original title. Many re-titling libraries do not register a specific song until the song is placed .. this eliminates a lot of useless work for them and overcrowding in the PRO databases.Dean

As Dean said, sometimes libraries won't register them until they are licensed by a client. But recently I had a couple of placements from a certain library and they were just titled generically by ASCAP because the pieces weren't registered with them yet, but they showed up on a cue sheet filed by the production company that licensed the piece. I'll probably have to contact the library to have them register the pieces. I have at least one Harpo piece like that too.I do like the new website and am looking forward to monitoring statements, etc. right on the site.Mazz

I'm excited that I will now be able to see statements on line. My understanding is BMI has had this for a while. I assume that the information will only be updated every quarter per the distribution dates... Casey

It's cool cause you can download it to your computer and print select pages etc.The newest thing they have now is they are also available as csv files so it should be possible to integrate them into database software and tabulate things like overall income by song and such...i think at least...unfortunately I'm clueless when it comes to database software...
