What is the most popular music genre used for film & tv??

I don't think there is just one. I think there's a dozen or more. Orchestral is big, but so is techno, rock, pop, electronica, etc

I am hoping for acoustic guitar bits...easy for me...easy to record and write in 15, 30 and 60 second edits. I hear a lot of them now that I am attuning myself to those little bits of music scattered everywhere.

When I sign with a library, I always ask what they place the most. The answers are, of course, all over the map. But I probably hear electronica, hip-hop, and rock the most.

Yey!! Thanks Everyone for Ur input... Listening to my Tv set, I think Ur all right...However I'm wondering... Does Metal = Rock too?If so... then, would hybrid Orchestra Electronica Metal count as the above listed??Hmmm... I don't hear too much of that kind of hybrid stuff on my Tv yet...However, my reception here is craptacular & I can only receive 1 channel... so, my observations may not be that accurate... Luckily I still get "Dexter" & "House" ^_^K

Interesting one, Kel, eh? Sometimes I think my rock style ventures too far towards metal, and wonder if that has any commercial value. My last forward had a comment something akin to 'a little more metal than hard rock, but close enough'...I guess if the bar were any higher, it would have been returned.I do find myself listening very closely to the TV more now than actually watching it ha ha. Orchestral seems to be a common one to my ears on mainstream TV (although often as a hybrid with something more contemporary), but than I watch the sports channels and there is still a lot of classic styled rock & metal for extreme sports, MotoX, NASCAR and so on. No such thing as Nu Metal, right? Based on your recent collaboration with Orest, I'd say there is absolutely something to pitch. Ya notice how the requirements are sometimes like a weather report (maybe that's from a Euro perspective, now!)...they give ya a bit of everything, so as to cover all possibilities. I have to scratch my head sometimes when the library is asking for original (as in unique) alt rock and quote Coldplay or U2 as the reference band. Talk about hedging yer bets

Michael Laskow actually posted on here not too long ago about how music libraries can't get enough Hip Hop instrumentals. And from what I've seen, I would say that Hip Hop is definitely one of the most used genres - even on shows that you wouldn't think would use Hip Hop.Now, whether it is the *most* used genre I can't say for sure, but it is definitely near the top. -Steve

For library music, I'd guess #1 would be whatever is culturally "hip" at the moment you're writing.After that, whatever is timeless.For film, if you're lucky enough to get a scoring gig, hopefully it's on the merits of what you've demonstrated to the film makers. Otherwise, be prepared to do your research and be able to write in a whole bunch of different styles.
