I am asking in the context of having a 3rd person perform these functions for a specific recording and having them sign a release form, stating that I retain full ownership of the Master and can use the Master recording for film/tv, etc. When you have someone Master your song .. mastering only, not mixing too .. what title do you give them on the release form .. are they 'a producer', 'a mastering engineer', 'a studio engineer' or ??? What about mixing and mastering? What title do I give them on the release form: 'a producer' or 'a studio engineer'? Or ???Thanks,Dean

When someone masters your songs it is simply listed as "mastered by such and such" same for mixing, I wouldn't think a release form would come into play unless they co-wrote or possibly produced depending on your agreement.

In general, release forms apply to performers. However, since some producers have different viewpoints on who owns what, I make sure that my producer also signs a release. I can't see any need to have anyone doing pure mastering sign a release. Casey

Interesting. It seems maybe I have been going too far. Thanks. Everyone else agree that MASTERING does not require a signed release form?Casey, what about someone who MIXES AND MASTERS the recording? Do they need to sign a release form? Sounds like you would say "NO".

If you get release forms from the folks that mix and master, next you'll need to get one from the kid who delivers the pizza. I think you can safely skip them. Even Procul Harem only got sued by a musician.

Good! It was starting to feel like all I would be doing with my life was getting releases. lolBut what if I write a song about pizza, right after someone delivers it? Maybe I will need that release after all. lol Or just a bigger tip next time.Dean

Bribe a pizza kid? I am shocked and mortified. Put his picture on the CD instead. Then it's art instead of a bribe. But check with a certified music legal beagle before doing anything. And if the pizza is cold you are safe anyway.
