How NOT to market yourself or song

I got this in my publisher email inbox today. I was on a huge distribution list of publishers who were in the email's "TO"...I have a hit song.Work with an artist that has been signed with [Major Label] records.I would like to send this song to you for your review – it’s a cross format song, pop/rock/country.
http://www.myspace.com/person-xWe are interested in placement with an artist, TV, or film – but, we would first like to get your thoughts on the song. Please let me know if I may send this to you [via CD, mp3, or link]. Thank you for your time.Best Regards,Person XMost of you know this...NEVER, NEVER, NEVER open your communication with "I have a hit song". It's one of the most major turn-offs to the recipient. If you do a mass email, always put the email addresses in the BCC field (blind copy) so the receivers don't see all the other addresses and know it was a broadcast.Start with saying you have a hit song and then ask the OPINION of a hundred publishers? You never ask a professional for their OPINION (let alone a hundred or so) unless you already have a relationship. You either pitch or you don't- get the opinions elsewhere first.Cross format "pop/rock/country" ? I'm assuming that was a VERY bad attempt at a clever way of covering all bases in the mass email to publishers. Almost guarantees a trip to the trash can.I will contact the person and nicely explain why he shouldn't do that and give him some advice which hopefully he'll accept. Casey

Actually I did a very comprehensive song review for this person and it was not an ego stroke at all... Just the facts... What works and what doesn't... I hope he takes it to heart or at least gets a professional opinion or two and sees what sticks for him.... A good guy... We all got help from someone early on... Paying it forward... Casey

yeah casey, me too on that list!i'd only say that if someone in the industry asks after 15 minutes, "do you know how good you are?" you answer as honestly as you can....but ONLY after his question, and only after establishing a mutual relationship. all the best,wh
