Eastwest Play Engine - troubleshooting help please

Hi Everyone,

I'm stuck trying to figure out an issue I have using the Play Engine with Hollywood Strings.

I have created 1 instance of play.
I have loaded in 4 samples patches (in Play) - In Play, I have also - given each a Midi Channel (1, 2, 3, 4), and then given each it's own output also (1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8).

Back in Protools, I have created 4 Instrument Channels (Play1-1, Play 1-2, Play 1-3 Play 1-4) - to correspond to the above 4 Midi Channels.
I have also - in the I/O section of Protools - made Inputs (play 3-4, Play5-6, Play 7-8).

So that the output of Play goes into the Input of Protools.

But…. I have the sound patches coming out all of the 4 Instrument tracks I made - at once.
They should be separately sounding instruments. :(

I have written the midi data previously, and dropped into the track.
I'm yet to try replaying in the parts - this may solve the problem..

Rebecca

in pro tools you created 4 instrument channels even though you only have 1 instrument??

You've set up Play as one multi-timbral instrument, 4 midi channels to the 4 patches. 4 separate midi tracks for each of the channels?
Usually, there is one stereo output for the 1 instrument with the 4 patches.

Play will need 4 audio outs to do what you are trying to do. They can all go to 1 protools stereo buss, but I believe Play is where your
dilemma is, and it sounds like you only have play set up for 1 stereo out.

Thanks Guys.

Andy, I watched your video and will try your setup.

I used this Youtube for my set up…… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVVKspP4jpQ

What are your thoughts on this Youtube?

its fine.

the way in the video you posted is the same idea. Note that how on each instrument track he is assigning the MIDI control as well as the output. Its like two in one.

his way works. my way works. if you assign all the right things together.

Hi Andy,

I followed your instructional video.
I still have the 'bleed'.

I muted the Play 1-1 track, and I can hear and see the noted being played through Play1-2, 1-3 etc.

I don't know the Protools 'Setup' menu well - I wonder if I need to do something there??

Thanks so much for your video btw.

Rebecca

Hi Rebecca, Here's a screenshot of a play template that works for me. It's similar to your initial setup I think.

I just lost iPhoto off this computer so I can't reduce the photo to upload.
Will try from a different computer later.
I think like Len said, in the play mixer window you should have all channels set to your main outs.

Thanks Les and Len.

I think I've done the outputs correctly?? - they're all at Output 1-2 - the default. Audio output??

Yes one stereo out Len…

So, under setup in Protools, I need to make more outputs??

- not sure what to do.

Rebecca

Ignore 2nd channel that says 3&4 out, should be mains.
Hope this works for you.
I guess Andy has been setting play up since well before Pro Tools had instrument tracks. Could probably do it with his eyes closed. I just hope I never lose my template, it's a pain otherwise.
