Bummer Ron.
save often!
You didn't exactly dish too much on what is actually going on, but in cases where things are freezing:
How much space do you have on your record drive? On your system drive? On any other drives you use?
On your system drive - what version of OSX are you on? Have you ever made a backup, and reinstalled everything on your primary system drive from scratch (not copying stuff, but installing directly?)
Have you repaired your disk permissions using the Disk Utility built into OSX?
With Logic - have you ever trashed your preferences (Google on how to do this) and then restarted Logic?
these are the usual things that I do.
Since Logic 9 is pretty old at this point, if you keep installing newer versions of plugins and such, there might be little things that don't play well together. If you can afford it, and you have a new enough Mac, and a new enough operating system, the $199 for Logic X might be a good investment. Check carefully all your specs before jumping into this. Keep in mind that whatever bugs existed in Logic 9.1.8 are going to be there forever, as Apple has stopped updating it.
