Does anyone have any advice on getting the best sound when recording and mixing both ukulele and mandolin?
Mandolin seems particularly hard to get a nice full, natural sound when using single notes for lead melody.

By reputation, this is among the best mics for mandoliin, and also a good all-rounder. http://www.frontendaudio.com/Roswell-Mi ... p/1836.htm It's also a bang per buck champ. Mandos can be difficult to capture; if a mic has hyped trebles, and many do, it's hard to capture a meaty mando sound. I don't know if it's available in the UK, as of yet.

I've been trying both a Rodes N5 and Oktava MK 012a, both with Cardiod capsule.
