Hard Drive Layout Discussion

I'm a MacBook Air (8GB ram) / Logic Pro user. Currently I have two external 7200RPM 1TB USB3 drives. In general, when a drive reaches 80% full you greatly increase the likelihood of performance problems, especially when working with large libraries due to caching).

My drive layout:
  • Internal SSD 256GB (35% remaining)
  • Kontakt Drive - 1TB 7200rpm USB3 (25% remaining): Dedicated to Kontakt Ultimate plus all other add-ons: Omnisphere, Lethal, Spire, samples, plus many Kontakt libraries)
  • Data Drive - 1TB 7200rpm USB3 (85% remaining): Stores all of my project files, bounces, audio files, collaboration folders, backups of software installation files.
So as it stands today. I'm probably one Black Friday away from surpassing 1TB of data in total. I'm considering putting everything onto a single 2TB drive to open jul a port and simplify just a tad. This will also make backups easier.

Currently 2TB SSD drives are running about $650-ish, not quite ready for that price point (especially when I need new monitors and an 88-key weighted keyboard first).:)

I'm curious to see what others are doing re: hard drive layouts and if there is any advice. Russell, I think I remember you consolidating drives recently, not sure though. What say the Taxi Collective?

Forgot to mention one thing: If anyone is using multiple drives, are you doing RAID 0, 1 or 5? Curious to see if RAID1 causes much of a performance hit.
