I'm trying to achieve some hybrid orchestral risers but I'm not getting the results wanted.
So I thought I'd reach out and see if someone has encountered such a thing in his or her production

Hey Edmond, I haven't had a chance to check out the links you and the others have posted, but you can make some of your own risers by simply reversing audio of whole notes.

I VERY often use reverse cymbal crashes, reverse low piano whole notes, reverse guitar chords, reverse breath exhales, and reverse church bells in my music. And I use these reverse "risers" in music ranging from tension, to hip hop, to country, to horror, and many other styles. Never underestimate the power of a good reverse!

I do these all the time. The basics are very simple but you can get as creative as you like.

Start with an appropriate sound, maybe a synth patch, a guitar note, reversed cymbal, etc. Use a pitch shifter to create the rise - automate smooth curves. You can use a slow rising curve or a very fast curve. Whatever suits the spot. Then add effects: grain delay, distortion, chorus, glitch/stutter, reverb, etc.

Try layering different sounds rising or falling at different rates. Use two pitch shifters, one slow and one fast at the end to get extra tense.

it's like you take a riser, and then slice it up.
Seemed to me first like a side-chain compressor, but then again there are some extremely sharp silences
I am not sure I'm being clear with my description, but in the reference (and I linked it to the time where this riser starts) you can hear it well

Yep, it's just sliced-up audio, now that I've had a chance to listen to it.

Yep, you can do that manually by slicing audio. Or you can use a tool like Izotope Stutter Edit or Sugar Bytes Turnado. There was a freebie called Illformed Glitch, but looks like they've released Glitch 2 with a small price tag.

But yes, with a bit of patience and care, it can be easily done by hand by slicing, as Matt says.

I was actually experimenting with a side chained noise gate. It could work but I guess I'll need to add a filter. I'm still experimenting, and will have a look to your suggestions Rob
