I haven't been mixing for long and find I often run up blind alleys and can't hear the wood for the trees...Sorry

I'm beginning to think that mixing is like singing, listen to the good ones and emulate them.

I don't wish to offend any singing teachers or singing coaches, but why would I take lessons singing from José Carreras when I can just listen to him sing and learn from that??

But maybe that's why I sing like Captain Beefheart, I never sang in school and used to get into trouble because I didn't,lol, but not only did the music teacher pick out crappy songs, but ones she thought flattered her voice best, and always sang lead, and thought of the students as backup singers?! I was only a kid, but I wasn't totally stupid,lol!

Come to think of it, why did I even pursue music in the first place?
Between that and those dang flutophones! Not to mention relatives that sang religious music that never invited me to sing with them, okay so I did drop the religion,lol!

But there's no guarantee José could teach you anything; teaching singing isn't the same skill as singing.

Mojo, I never said anything about Tiger Woods or his coaches, never knew anything, but I did google Tiger Wood's coach, and it looks like he had more than one. Though I'm gonna guess and say none,lol! But isn't a coach like a manager, or an agent, or an a&r team? Or even a mixer? The successful ones pick the right talent, or the right talent stumbles onto them?? The real question is what coach is good enough to turn me into a Tiger Woods? Maybe I'm just under estimating myself. Bwaaaaaaaaaaaah

It's the age old parenting question, do parents teach their kids more from what they say or what they do? That's why I asked why I would hire Jose as a singing teacher when I could learn more by his singing. Though I will say that, yes, I believe teaching is a particular skill separate from the subject being taught, not an ounce of doubt there. And maybe that is the whole point, a teacher is a very poor person to emulate, though very skilled and effective at delivering the most useful method to learn the craft or goal at task. Didn't I just undermine the point I made previously?? I don't know, maybe I was just calling out poor teachers,lol!
