total novice recording

Hi - I want to do simple singer songwriter recordings of piano/keyboards and voice. I have a mic and windows 10 laptop. Should i use an keyboard or a midi keyboard or simply record the piano? and hats a good but inexpensive software to get started? Thank you!

I would probably use a midi controller with a vst keyboard software. usb?? I wouldn't attempt recording a real piano unless you have the proper equipment, room and knowledge.

You don't say what mic you have and if you have an audio interface for the computer.

Someone gave you an answer, but I wanted to give some advice:

You should understand that you can get a next to professional sound relatively cheap if you understand a few simple concepts. Lucky for us, you can learn these things for free on youtube.

Most important concepts (once you understand the basics of running the program):
-EQ
-Compression
-Reverb

All good advice, so far, but I'd add that all of the named processes were invented to fix what coulda gone right, right at the source, so I'd say the first rule is 'get the sound at the source, if you can'.
