Hey Charles! I don't have any experience with the P115, but I do own a P45 and I believe they're pretty similar. I use the P45 solely as a MIDI controller when recording music, but I do use it quite a bit for teaching (as well as my upright). I believe the P115 has a little more in the way of features, but as I'm not using it as a 'stage piano', I went for the 45 as it has all the same basic requirements that I need. (If I'm using a stage piano I prefer one of the larger Yamaha models or Nord - if I'm not running everything through my Mac). I'm a big fan of the action and feel of the keyboard, which is why I keep coming back to it for recording. And as for teaching, the tone is really pretty good for the price point.
In the past I have deliberated over several of the more 'upscale' models, but for the most part what you end up paying for are things like additional sounds on your keyboard (which I have zero use for!) Some have more option in the way of connections - USB, MIDI ports etc - but I just use the one USB port on mine, which connects straight into my computer.
All in all, I really like Yamaha's line of stage pianos. If I
was using it live, I'd be running all sounds through my Mac anyway so I can use my own samples. But it's perfect as a controller and something to teach on. I guess it depends on your ultimate use, but it sounds like you're doing something similar!
