So, whats Matthew using?

Hi everyone - I showed my friends "kid" (early 20s) the taxi email about Matthew Vander Boegh and his set up, and we listened to his music. Tommy wants to get a simple setup like the picture showed to start learning and writing. He has a decent Mac already, my old mixing speakers. He needs the keyboard and DAW (not GarageBand) and then we'll get him some money for samples etc after that.

I searched on the forums to see if there is info on Matthew's set up and was wondering if anyone knows what he has. Tommy's reaction on hearing Mathew's music was "Yup, thats what I want to learn", so I figured I'd ask here and see if anyone knows or can suggest a straightforward setup that interfaces easily to get him up and running.

Of course, it doesn't have to be Matthew's specific set up if that is a top secret thing :) but just a good streamlined not too expensive set up that maps easily and gets the job done.

Thanks in advance - Anne

Hey Anne, my friend Andy Gabrys alerted me to this post, and nudged me to respond personally. So here I am!

I JUST (as of like 2 minutes ago) posted the pictures of my "studio" and equipment in the Home Studio area of these forums. Here's a link: the-shed-my-multi-million-dollar-yeah-r ... 39179.html

I'm not using much.... just ProTools on an iMac, really. I've got two M-Audio BX8 speakers and a small & cheap interface. If you bought everything I use on your own, my setup would cost you about:

$450 for the pair of speakers
$600 for ProTools
$150 for the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface
$50 for the M-Audio keyboard
$2,000-$3,500 for the computer (this is the biggest variable, depending on how much you max it out in terms of power & memory)

The other main expense is all geared towards sound libraries, virtual instruments, loops, etc. But you don't need to buy much of this right away.... it's something you accumulate over years.

Also, to have a setup like mine, you'd be looking at other fringe expenses like:
$35 for a cheap folding table
$10 for a table cloth
$5 for a cutting board which doubles as a mouse pad
$50 for a cheap chair

I clearly don't use much. And I certainly don't use anything fancy! When most people see my studio in person, they're like, "That's it?!?!". Ummmm, yup! For the type of music I make, this is all I really need!

Hope that helps. Feel free to post more questions as a reply to this thread.

~~Matt

Heya Homie.

your pix don't show the window air conditioner... i know you got one. Your certainly can't run it constantly. Do you ever turn it off while mixing?

I guess my reply didn’t pos5 so I will recap quickly....Thank You For Sharing. He can start off with what he has and I can lend him my m audio keys, speakers and gauge if needed. He has an older quad i7 iMac with 16gb so he should be able to try things well and see if he likes it and digs in.
