Headphone Mix Vs NS-10s

Hey All,

I was working on a rhythm track mix on headphones (Shure 840s), and I thought it sounded pretty good. Then I fired up my Yamaha NS-10s pushed by a QVC power amp.

Woah! What a difference!... I fine-tuned the mix on the NS-10s, and then put the phones back on.

Amazing! The old adage "If you can make a mix sound good on NS-10s, they'll sound good on any speaker" is true!

I was ready to sell my Yamahas (circa 1985), but no longer. They are fantastic for mixing, especially the lower and upper midrange. I'll never sell those babies!

Cheers,

Ern :)

No, never! I DID use a Marantz premap as an EQ on them, though... People who say they sound horrible: You're RIGHT! Man, I can't listen to others' music on NS-10s. Yuk. But they aren't made for that.

I've always seen them straight from a Crown D75 right next to a set of Auratones. That was the standard accompaniment for the Urie Time Align big monitors when I worked the NYC Studios.

But your right, make it sound good on those and it will sound good on everything!

Speaking of tissues, I remember that one of the big trade magazines, Mix magazine????, actually did an acoustic study on various brands of tissue. That was years ago and I think it was more tongue in cheek although they scientifically went through every brand of tissue on the market.

I wish they still made them!
