Several times I've been in need of some gentle percussion using natural or organic instruments (but not orchestral and certainly not electronic hits). I can throw together loops or individual samples of various percussion instruments but I wondered whether there are other things that I'm not aware of. Here's one of the most suitable things I've found so far....

I'd happily buy this set and I'm sure it would meet many of my needs, but I just wondered what else there is. For example, is there an organic equivalent of some of the electronic percussion Kontakt instruments that have loops on keys (e.g. Evolve)? I've tried brushed drums but even those can be a bit heavy. So, if you wanted a very light rhythmic/percussive backing to support a gentle acoustic guitar piece, what would you use? Any thoughts much appreciated.

There's a couple drumdrops albums, Royal drops and Motown, that have congas, tambourine, handclaps, shakers.
Much probably could be the drumming style, for example Al Jackson, jr., that never seems to overwhelm the track, not many crash
cymbals, many light ride hit patterns for example. The Royal drops tracks emulates his style, but you can listen to any Otis Redding or other stax recordings, and Al Green to get a taste of his drumming style.

there are different packs for the loops of each track, the stems are mixed, the multitrack sessions aren't mixed so you can mix the
mics for the sound you wish and then cut your own loops. the mt sessions are only $8.03 per track. that might be the most organic
method to get the sound you are after.

Thanks for the tip on Drum Drops Len. Wow, back in the late 1970's or early 80's I had a Drum Drops vinyl album of backing tracks. I thought the scratches were part of the percussion They must have been the first company to provide such things, so I'm amazed they're still going. The tracks you linked to are very interesting and will come in handy so I'll certainly keep them for future reference. If I chopped back some of the main drum parts what's left might work for me in this case, but I'm still wondering what else is out there though.

Hey Graham, I think the gentle, natural, organic, might be throwing me off a little. I think most of the drum kit samples from different mfgs. have multiple velocity samples and also allow at least to mix the room mic with the component mic. Also, the style for the gentle acoustic guitar piece probably has to do more with what sounds natural. And the rhythms are what mainly distinguish
a style or genre.

Of course Andy! I'd seen that expansion but somehow dismissed it because I wasn't looking for Latin styles in particular (not Timbales anyway), but it looks flexible enough to get some mileage from. Thanks, its now on my list.

That's a great gadget Mark, and I would like one. My rhythmic playing wouldn't match even a half-decent drummer's but it'd be fun. Then again, I might as well play the rhythms on the keyboard. I had a Korg Wavedrum for a while and enjoyed playing with it, but I wasn't making the most of it so it had to go.

My favorite "gentle, natural percussion" instrument is a --- SALT SHAKER! Or anything else out of your spice cabinet that sounds good to you.

A must: Get you favorite microphone for this kind of thing. Put it CLOSE to your shaker, and turn the gain WAY up to capture all the little salt grains shaking around.

Another trick I've used is getting a metal bowl, and filling it half up with water. Put 2 condenser mics close-up (for a stereo effect) and gently tap the bowl with a drum stick, or the butt-end of a kitchen wooden spoon. Sounds great!
