Free Windows / Unix "vocaloid" (virtual singing) application

Hey All! I just stumbled across this as I was looking for some sort of vocal related plugin.

I haven't tested it out or anything yet but it looks really cool and is right up my alley in terms of composition.

It's a (currently) free vocaloid application. It comes with a pretty decent English virtual singer. You can download it here. The way they word it "Technical Preview" makes me wonder if they will charge for it in the future. It seems to be a standalone application so I'm not sure if it's a "plugin".

Here is a sample of what it can do.

This is the kind of thing that fascinates me and I feel can be helpful to a songwriter and even be featured in some genres. I will be doing a deep dive on this over the weekend and see where it goes.

Interested to hear anyone else's experience of using this. I've downloaded it and had a very brief play about but to be frank and brutally honest I found it a bit disappointing; it's not the easiest to use and there's an issue with getting vibrato and pitch bends 'right' with it. There might be some sort of YouTube tutorial I'm overlooking but any sort of video I've seen so far hasn't exactly been too helpful.

As I'm primarily a lyricist that is/has slowly moved into toplining I was looking for something that would really compensate for my lack of vocal ability. Sure, using piano/keys works to a degree but again it's limited in that it doesn't really allow for pitch bend, vibrato etc and prosody and scansion can be a bit of a problem in terms of lyrics as a 'read' and topline as a 'listen'.

I've seen good reviews of Yamaha's Vocalaid 5 on-line and have liked some of the YouTube tutorials. Certainly seems more functional, user friendly and in line with what I'm after than the Unix version is. It's $200, though, so I want to be sure it's worth it before I splash the $ on it! Does anyone on here use it, and if so what are your thoughts? Are there better/similar cheaper programmes that you'd recommend instead?

Not sure why the focus on Linux since the ratio of music apps on Windows and Mac are far greater than on Linux. (No I'm not knocking Linux either, just stating a fact).
Probably because Linux is open source??

You could probably get a better result using auto-tune or similar, even if you don't sing that well.

Just came across an updated version that was released Xmas eve - it certainly seems more user friendly and now has an ability to layer harmonies etc. It's much cheaper than the Yamaha version I've also seen. You can still use it as a demo and if the notion takes you to buy it it's $79. Imma play about with this newer version and see if it wins me over from my impulse to buy Yamaha....

For anyone else that's interested checkout this brief demo/tutorial from YouTube:
