With her historic Grammy sweep beginning to fade in the rearview mirror, it's time to gear up (or maybe down) for all the forthcoming Billie Eilish a la requests, so here for your reading pleasure is a breakdown of her minimal equipment, aesthetic and songwriting/production process, courtesy of the folks at Sound On Sound:

And here is a complete mix breakdown with with tracklists and screenshots, for Bad Guy:

Mix engineer Rob Kinelski really gives away the store in this second link, sparing none of the details. Enjoy!

Not sure it is the same article Mojobone already posted (SOS) but here are some of the plugins used in the production: https://www.waves.com/breaking-the-mix- ... b-kinelski

Excellent article Matt! This one quote is worth the entire read imo.

“When I listen to the album, I get both a sparse and full feeling simultaneously. Did it come to you with a lot of space?”

“No, it came to me pretty full actually. If anything, I did some subtraction. A lot of my EQing of her vocal is subtraction because everything is close-mic’d and whispered. But because there's so much space in the production, it makes the vocal feel massive. A lot of people don't realize that the less you put on a record, the bigger it sounds. You know on that Johnny Cash album where it’s just his vocal and an acoustic? It sounds huge, because that’s all there is! When you stack 400 tracks it actually becomes small.”

I find her so creepy, I don't want to touch her. In fact, if I had a teenage kid, I would be very concerned about them listening to her, and watch very closely. Way too suicidal in my opinion.

Don't fall for the image hype. Absolutely, her videos are creepy. But I strongly suggest you check out any of the interviews she has done on late night television, or with Ellen. She is only 18 yet has a solid head on her shoulders. She reminds me a ton of my 20yr-old daughter. The video image she portrays does her a disservice, her music is heartfelt and delivered wonderfully. Don't fall for the "grownups should dislike her" mindset. She is gifted.

If I were influenced by Rob Zombie, Nine Inch Nails and Tim Burton films, I guess I'd be a little creepy. I actually was influenced by Alice Cooper, so yeah...creepy, me.

Thanks for posting Mojo!
I have heard the hype but until haven't paid too much attention. I do have to say that both articles are pretty inspiring. All I have to do now is actually listen to the music. I have heard some great things.

Thanks!

I heard a live interview with Billie and Fin on Howard Stern along with live performances. They're both incredibly talented and intelligent. Billie's a little wacky sure, but she's an artist. Tons of charisma. The two of them definitely know what they are doing, whether you like their imagery or not. I have a 13 year old daughter and although I am not a fan of all the "themes" they use, I surely appreciate their songwriting, performance, production, and creativity. IMO, it's much better and much more original than most of the music I hear from new artists today.
