looking for reasonable pitch correcting tool...

...to pitch vocals. or a free one, if there is any such
just can't afford melodyne at the moment. any recommendations?

Melodyne Essential is 100 bucks and will do all that you want for monophonic sources eg vocals.

Don't know about the freebies, but Melodyne is almost the de facto standard nowadays as far as pitch correcting vocals. You can download a free 30 day trial to check it out.

i've been checking out gsnap, but i suspect that you can't manually correct individual notes like you can with melodyne(...?) i hire online singers a lot, and very often i need to have my producer pitch correct single vocal notes/words several steps, because the singer simply sings it wrong. i would like to do this myself.

ok thanks a lot for your help guys
maybe i'll try out gsnap or melodyne essential then. what i like about melodyne is the way you can just move notes seamlessly around, no need to split or feed things like midi into it.

This is not problem with Gsnap. The easiest thing to do would be to split the vocal track into a part that is just autotuned and a part that is tuned according to MIDI. But, from memory, I think Gsnap (and also Kerovee) can do that in one track, as the MIDI input overwrites the general autotune function. So, if both are working at the same time, it simply autotunes everything to the nearest note UNLESS suddenly a MIDI note is fed in and then that part is tuned to that specific note.
I think, you should be able to do what you want to do.

Interesting. I've been playing about a bit with Gsnap recently using the autotune; basically using the 'subtle' preset and choosing a scale. Did not know about the midi feed in option though... Any tutorials on YouTube for a complete newbie dummy like me that you would recommend. I'm using Audacity's free version of Gsnap if that makes any difference....

If you have a DAW that supports ARA ( which is most of 'em now ) you can't really beat the way Melodyne intergrates with the workflow, as well as having the best tools.
