Great realistic sounding samples would be my highest priority.

I think 'realism' is something that should always be looked at in context of the whole mix. In other words, a decent (not perfect) sounding beat will most likely not 'annoy' anyone for its lack of realism if the rest of the mix is 'distracting enough' and if you e.g. need a great sounding real cymbal in the intro you can get that on Splice... I think you already know where I am heading at.... Instead of basing the decision solely based on the realism of the product, I would rather try to get an interface that is easy to use and allows for quick creative choices. To that end I prefer the Logic Drummer as a starting point (or programming by hand). In a full mix with other instruments + a good arrangement you can get away with surprisingly basic individual drum samples.

I am working on the 50s instrumental listing, and I haven't found anything in the Logic drummer that I like in that context.

When I listen to Elvis, Buddy Holly, etc, it sounds like I may need to low and high pass the entire kit. The drums are very quiet and almost not noticeable. I haven't tried that.

The Logic kit isn't inspiring me.

I am not familiar with that particular listing but if the drums are - as you said - rather quiet and almost not noticeable that IMO hardly warrants the investment of +200USD for a drum plugin. I'd rather start with the rest of the arrangement and pencil in some drums by hand.... maybe that is all you need?

I really do wish Apple would branch out their "drummers" in Logic's drummer and include drummers from different eras, etc

One thing about Logic Drummer that I overlooked and only recently found out about was the "Producer Kits" that are on the menu all the way at the bottom when you're looking at kits. These let you create individual channel strips in the mixer for each drum-- and there is a lot more variety in terms of customization for each piece of the kit.

I hate programming drums/playing finger drums. If I had to tackle a 50's listing, I'd try to get a compelling performance in Logic's Drummer, then I'd convert the regions to MIDI and use it to trigger something like Abbey Road's 50's drummer or similar.

EZ Drummer comes with a vintage kit, which seems what you are in need of, Rick.
I have got both products, and, until now, I used SSD more for rock stuff, and EZD for pop/vintage.

Word I hear is EZ Drums is more flexible, SS sound more 'produced'. Can't say more, cuz I hardly use anything but Addictive; but for some odds and ends, I have everything they offer.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I am going to try a hybrid approach. The producer kits in the new version of logic seem a bit more tweakable than they were before. There also seems to be more kits to choose from. I just upgraded to 10.6.1. I am going to try to tweak them to get the sounds of the old songs and the vintage kit samples in EZ drummer.
