May not be that inexpensive, but here’s my recommendation for clarinet:

+1 - The Spitfire stuff is generally great (and they have a very good marketing department

) but sometimes the stuff is not well sampled - so be prepared for sudden surprises. In the BBC Discovery version some of the pizzicato samples (e.g. double basss) have a rather annoying slap back sound in the lower register, which is hard to edit out but in context of a full orchestration you can get away with it. (I used the Spitfire BBC Discovery version on a recent pizzicato track which was forwarded but I had to put in quite a lot of effort to make everything work). For bread and butter I actually think the NI Session Strings sound quite good in the pizzicato setting. I also like the staccato clarinets in the BBC Discovery Orchestra.
Cheers,
Matt

I agree about the slapback sound with the doublebass in the BBC library. I'm trying out the doublebass sound from trillian. Thought it makes a good replacement for the low end that would normally be occupied by BBC strings. Trillian although only bass (electric, synth and acoustic) is worth the investment in my opinion, but I don't think it can be considered inexpensive. I think it's around $400 now. Just thought I'd throw this out there.
