Looking for the Pink Floyd "sound"

The sound I'm looking for is the "droning" should behind the long intro of "Shine on you crazy diamond".

I know it sounds simple, but it's a devil to try and replicate.
It's almost like "silence, held together with sound".

I've got many professional VST plugins (East West, Spitfire, Vienna, Garritan, One that sounds like a wailing monk and everything in between ), including all the current sounds packaged with the latest Cubase 11 Pro.

I seem to have a "blind spot" when it comes to getting very close to this sound. :geek: ;)

Any pointers much appreciated.

Thanks
Paul.

Yes, that video from Mark nails the string sound. I also hear some reversed element layered on as well, mostly on the left side. I think you could maybe achieve a similar sound by reproducing this with strings and adding a lo-fi effect to it. Good luck!

Thanks guys. Never thought to look on YouTube  :!:

I shall have a crack at that tomorrow. If I haven't got (or can't find) a vst suitable, I've got an old Yamaha with a very similar sound - then mix that with a deep organ bass and see where I get to.

I've got a mini Moog vst but, best steer clear of that - don't want a nasty email from Mr Pink or Mr Floyd :D

Bear in mind what hardware was available to make those sounds and much will be revealed; I wish I'd never sold my Crumar String Machine. PF probably used the more venerable Road Runner, or some other such, but samples won't really get you there, because ambient temperature and air pressure affected those old, analog beasts and tuning, even amongst adjacent notes, could be a bit spotty.
