Hi Taxi Drivers!

Q1: When exporting or bouncing stems in logic are the stems raw (no effects, not panned and volume at "0") OR are they exactly as they are in your mix?

Q2: Is there a best practice for making stems in Logic Pro X?

I don't use Logic but the process should be much the same regardless of which DAW you use.

When providing stems for libraries I've always made mine the same as they are in the full mix, and all exactly the same length as the full mix, even if that leaves silent gaps in places. The level, pan and FX processing is 'baked in' to each stem, but just be careful with things like side-chaining, and avoid heavy-handed mixbus processing, otherwise individual stems might behave differently when the other stems are not in use.

There are several ways to create stems in Logic.
One of the ways, can work in logic or even any other DAW, is to create 8-10 audio tracks, and you route your different groups and subgroups to those tracks, ie AllDrums to Audio 1, Bass to audio 2 etc.. and then arm and record all those track. The result is you'll have the audio stems within you logic session, that you can place in a folder and mute its output.
The other way is to have track stacks (and that's logic only). Select your different track stacks while holding the command button, then go to file- export.. there you will see the number of track stacks selected (ie 8). There will be an option saying export 8 tracks as audio files.
This is my favorite way to export stems or even individual tracks. The reason being that you can have control over file naming structure, and other options as in length of the audio file, with or without effects, and with or without panning.
