Who do composers use to built their websites?

Post by charlie2 » Wed Jul 14, 2010 8:58 am

I got way too much to do and I don't have time for websites, but I need a really nice one.

I remember reading a post that recommended a person specializing in builting composer/songwriter websites. Anyone know of any such people and what they charge?

thanks

Hostbaby (www.hostbaby.com) has "instant" musician websites available. They offer a large number of templates, music players, etc. You can get your website running in a matter of minutes. I think it's $19.95 a month. Many of us don't need a custom designed website and doing it this way saves the cost of development.

Best,
:) Casey

I like WordPress; there's some customization involved, but lotsa templates to work with; my take is, I gotta learn all this web stuff eventually, and HTML is really just text editing, anyway. If you take a completely hands-off approach, you end up paying more $ to have your business be at someone else's mercy. In any case, there are way cheaper options, if you don't mind rolling your own: http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Hostin ... rigin=Home My buck O' five, your mileage may vary.

George Battle does really beautiful websites for much less than most, expecially for custom built sites. I've used him twice and will use him again for my 3rd. He's well worth it.

I second the wordpress thing. And while hostbaby is an option, I would wonder about who actually owns your website - you or hostbaby. So, if they ever decide to discontinue this service - do you start over from scratch?

Wordpress is a DIY solution, but not being technical (and not wanting to spend the time learning), I've used Jesse Peterson for my wordpress site. He's incredibly fast and knows his stuff. And once you get the basic wordpress up, changing it, upgrading, even completely changing the look and feel is really ridiculously easy.

Please tell Jesse I sent you:

WordPress is awesome. Many composer websites I've seen are built on WordPress templates, either custom or premium (eg. you have to pay for them.) A number of sample library developers use WordPress too. It's ultimately MUCH cheaper than HostBaby even if you factor in the cost of the template or custom design. HostBaby is what, $20/month? And you have some severe limitations with that. Buying your own space and setting up a WP site will cost less than half of that easy. HostGator, for example, offers space for as low as $4/month.

I'd like to throw my two cents in for Steve Hetrick for wordpress help, dataword@comcast.net

He and his partner Tracy just worked on a biz related site for me. They are priced right and do a good job. The have a reasonable followup-maintenance plan that makes me fell comfortable as well. Tell them Bill Gaunce sent you to them.
