I just bought a JBL music mix 16 and I dont have much experience working with these. I have been doing all my work through my Delta1010lt soundcard in my pc, but wanted to expand my options with a mixing board...soo. Yesterday I set it up and for some reason, I cannot get a stereo mix out of the "monitor out" OR the headphone mix. I have my main output from my Delta1010 going in to channels 3 and 4 on the mixing board. Panning doesnt affect anything and the volume sliders have no impact whatsoever on the volume. The listen buttons work, sensitivity, monitor/headphone knobs all work.

I have switched cables, verified the stereo mix coming out of the pc...I really dont know what could be happening here. Anyone know anything I may be doing wrong?

For some reason, when I hooked my studio monitors up to the xlr outputs instead of the monitor outs, I now have stereo in my main monitors, as well as the headphones and the 1/4 monitor outs that would only give me mono before - - and the faders are now affecting all mixes.

I dont get it. Just by hooking my speakers up through xlr?

The monitor bus on your board is probably mono.

The manual would be the first place to start. I couldn't find any JBL mixer manuals, however, I saw something that said it was the same thing as a Soundcraft Spirit F1, I did find where you could download this particular manual.

you'll have to determine if this is correct or not.
There is a mono sum rotary switch, and the mix left and right signals are summed to an impedence balanced mono output.
Then there is an issue that if the headphones are plugged into the phones jack, the monitor outputs are cut off. when the pfl/afl switch is pressed, either one, the monitor and headphones are switched to mono.

I don't know if these are the issues you are experiencing, but some of these mixers, especially digital ones, it's really nice to have the manual to really know what the heck is going on, so many things are multifunctional and they're not often very intuitive.

I should have mentioned that I do have the manual and had spent considerable time looking for an answer to this, as well as understanding everything else too (the comment about them not being very intuitive and different from other boards is so true...from my limited exposure).

The odd thing here is that both the headphone mix and the monitor outs were only producing mono UNTIL I plugged in the XLR cables to my powered monitors. Now, BOTH the headphone mix and monitor outs are in stereo...

Any ideas?

Knowing little about the board itself I an only guess that the mfg tried to make a mixer for several general uses. The board assumes you are running in mono ( generally live but not always ) until you hook it up in stereo ( generally recording but not always ). Smart board!
