Loops?

Hi all! I have been writing and recording songs a very long time but never tried my hand at using loops and samples. What's the copyright law for such things? Can we use loops in our projects and still submit them here?

It depends where the loop/sample is sourced from. You certainly couldn't just lift four bars of drums from a commercial release and use that. That would absolutely infringe the owners copyright. and if you ever got a hit would likely get you sued. Probably your best bet is to check out some of the sample libraries available these days .There are thousands covering every genre and instrument you can imagine. The whole point is that they grant you license to use the loops/sounds in your own material.

I'm in the same situation as you. I've been writing, recording & playing music for around 28 years. But, I've only been checking out loops for about the last year. I was a little resistant at first, but now I'm enjoying it.

Yes, I have been submitting songs with loops, but only commercially available loops. Each library has a licence that you agree to when you purchase their loops.

I occasionally use MIDI loops from Groovemonkee, DrumCore and Addictive Drums. Most Dedicated drum samplers come with bunches of such.

Yeah, the term LOOP can mean several different things. In general, if it's audio, there is a copyright law on them. If they are part of a purchased "loop package" you should read their usage notice or copyright notice. Even products such as StormDrum and Heavyocity's Evolve have different usage clauses that you should know before using.
Generally (GENERALLY) midi-based loops used for drum samplers like GrooveMonkee and other similar packages allow you to use their loops with no worries regarding copyright. You just can't resell them in any form.
It's best to read each library's policy. They're almost always different from each other.

I've been looking through the GarageBand loops just to mess around. I'll check out some of the libraries and see where that takes me.
