Instrumental Version of a Song?

I've got a question about an instrumental version of a song that would go along with the full version of the song with vocals. I haven't found anything to suggest what that means on TAXI yet; but I have found 3 ways to accomplish this on other websites, but no recommendation of which is best for music licensing. #1 - Make a second, identical mix with the only difference being that the vocals and non-musical sounds are muted. #2 - Make a second mix with the vocals and non-musical sounds muted, but then remix the remaining music tracks to sound the best they can without vocals. #3 - Record a new lead instrumental track or tracks to mix in place of the vocals which are muted (the new instrumental track(s) could be mixed at the lead vocal level, or at a lower level to blend with the music and not stick out like the vocals did). I could see that if a music editor wanted to cut between the vocal and instrumental versions, then #1 might be better. But if an editor wanted an instrumental version that sounded like a "real," finished song and to stand on its own, then #3 might be better. And #2 is kind of halfway between the two. From TAXI's experience, is one of these the best way to make an instrumental version?
