I've got many soft synths but I'm looking for a really good vsti that sounds very real in relations to solo and combination strings. Cello, violin, ect. I'd prefer not to break the bank but at this point I'd love to know what y'all think... You guys are the best! wta

Solo strings are tough, especially since Gary Garritan discontinued his two outstanding solo instruments. Your best would be either VSL's solo strings (they have a LOT of offerings, usually in the hundreds of dollars at least) or Dan Dean Solo Strings Advanced, which don't come with their own player/software like VSL, requiring Kontakt instead, but are a bit cheaper.

I have Kontakt 3 which uses many VSL instruments and find it to be worth the price tag.

Garritan has their Personal Orchastra 3rd edition out and you can solo or ensemble instruments, I've used their first edition a few years ago and it was good but has anyone tried their 3rd edition. I'm looking into VSL's stuff right now as well! Thanks Anne! ;-) wta

I don't own them personally but have heard good things about the solo violin and cello in Kirk Hunter's libraries. In general KH strings have a good reputation, especially for the price...Unfortunately I don't think anything beats the discontinued Garritan Strad and Cello...hopefully they will reappear either from Samplemodeling or in Garritan's new Aria player...(I'm not sure what the exact reason for discontinuing them was).

I think you can get a better quality with good soundfonts, because real instruments on VST sounds bad.

The Kirk Hunter solo viola in the Diamond orchestra is very nice. Also, the solo violin in EW Gypsy is quite good, but there's no cello in that library. For a twist, I really really like the Baritone violin in East West RA, in the Indian instruments section. I've used it a lot as a melody instrument and it is really expressive.Just a few random ideas.Mazz
