Hi,I'm just wondering what fellow logic users here do when saving/backing up songs to DVD or wherever.Assuming that you have EXS instruments in your project....do you always have both the options ticked in the "save as" dialogue? ie: copy EXS instruments and EXS samples to project folder? I'm just thinking......."if" you are not sharing files with anyone else and you are using default EXS samples - is it actually necessary for the "copy EXS samples" to be ticked? Is it just "safer" to always have everything (that you're using) ticked? Sorry if this is basic but I'm just trying to get my head around what is needed in what situation. (I've always got the audio files copied to the project folder.)Thank you,Rachel

Hi RachelI save everything to an external firewire hard drive (five hundred gig La Cie). Personally, I don't tick off the two options because I don't have the need to export my files. I figure that if, in the future, I have to send a project to some one who isn't using Logic, I'll just do the bouncing then and save my hard disk space for more projects. I know others, like Stick or Anne, are ahead of me in their understanding of the program so maybe you should wait for them to chime in before you listen to me!mewman

Yeah, I don't usually save that stuff. But, I'm almost always transferring from Logic to ProTools where everything becomes audio files. So, my FINAL version of anything is always in ProTools, and that's what I backup most carefully. In fact, I usually just drag only the Logic project itself into the PT backup folder, and leave all the audio files alone. I guess for someone that only works in Logic, I'd probably do something like build a backup of your samples folder every time you add a siginifcant library or something. Then if you ever get rid of stuff and need to go back and re-open some files, you'll have the state of your system from that time period. Or, in my experience, if I'm going back to a song I did that long ago, it's because I want to update it, and those old samples are going to be replaced anyway, with my newer cooler stuff. It depends on what you think you're going to need when or if you ever need to recover those projects down the line.

I don't use Logic but I would imagine the sampler is like Kontakt or the ones in Reason in that they look for the samples in the place they were the last time the project was opened. As long as you don't move your sample libraries, you should be able to re-create the instruments easily. If you do move them, you'll have to point the sampler to the new location, not a big issue.The only thing I'd recommend backing up with the project would be custom samples that you created for the project. I'd also put them on your sample library disk in case you want to use them for other projects. Mazz

Thanks a lot Mazz - that's along the lines I was thinking. For the moment, I'm going to leave everything that I have (not a great deal) where it is and add new sample libraries to the external drive - when they arrive. One day, I may be brave enough to move more stuff around and get away from "default" locations but for now...I'm just looking forward to writing some more stuff without running into any technical errors which I'm sure I'd manage although I'm careful! Just the PT version?
