I need some technical help, please

I've been asking about loss of quality by submitting mp3 instead of CD's. A couple of people responded that they are "streaming" the mp3's at "192 kbps" and that the quality is good. I record in Pro Tools at 44.1 khz -- I'm confused. A CD is burned at 16 bit / 44.1 khz, right? I though when I created an mp3 file from ProTools it was at 44.1 khz already. Did this person mean 192 khz. Can somebody clarify? Thanks a bunchLJW

192 kbps (kilobytes per second) vs. 192 khz (kilohertz per second... 44100 samples per second). All I know is that I record at 44.1/24bit. CD mixes are 44.1/16bit and. And decent sounding mp3s or mp4s are encoded at 44.1/192kbps. 128kbps is sorta crappy sounding but passable, and 320kbps is pretty darn good sounding. The higher the bit-rate (kbps) the bigger the file.

Quote:192 kbps (kilobytes per second) vs. 192 khz (kilohertz per second... 44100 samples per second). Kbps stands for kilo BITS per second and not kilo BYTES. There is a big difference in these two terms since a BYTE usually has 8 bits in it. A bit is a single digit (1 or 0). That is why a mp3 is a long way from a CD recording which is recorded at 44.1 thousand samples or BYTES. These bytes in CDs are 16 bits, which are reduced from 24 bits in high end DAWs. An mp3 at 192 thousand bits per second is a compromise from CD quality but an acceptable one to most people.
