Quote:EWQLS or GPO?Well, I don't own GPO. It really revolutionized the price point for orchestral samples. I like Gary Garritan. He's a good marketer. But frankly, the demos I've heard are not all that realistic. I DO own his Orchestral Strings Lite, though.I just bought EWQL Symphony Orchestra Gold. Wow! It is very power hungry, so much so that I had to buy a super PC to run it. (Emerald is off the charts). I've got plenty of nice-sounding libraries now, some on Gigastudio, some on Kontakt, and am in the process of making an orchestral template to choose which sounds are the best. Gold so far is at the top.A LOT of people use GPO, though, so it's best to judge for yourself.Ern

Gold is a very impressive-sounding library, so if you can afford the extra money - I've seen it as low as the $400 range - it's *well* worth getting it rather than Silver. The Platinum (not Emerald ) version is essentially the same thing, but 24 bits and in three mic positions. You need more than one computer to run it. The reason you need more computer is that the Gold and Platinum versions have release trails - the real hall reverb when you release the note. That uses up polyphony.GPO's strength is that it's compact, low-impact, and very good as a writing tool - which is Gary's stated goal.

I'd go with EWQLSO myself (actually, I did). I've heard some fantastic tracks done with Gold (and Silver for that matter)....you might hit the East West and Garritan sites and check the demo sounds, and I'm not sure about GPO, but East West has a forum where folks upload tunes created with the EWQLSO libraries...

I use VSL and like it a lot although I spend a lot of time tweaking sounds. A friend of mine has EWQL Silver and it's pretty impressive for the money. Z

I can't speak for GPO, but I started with EWQL Silver mostly because of the upgrade policy - you get full credit for your previous purchase when upgrading to the next quality level. It was important to me to have an upgrade path to higher quality levels as my budget allowed. I currently have the Gold version and it's my perception that EWQL has the best overally quality and sound. I think Traveling Ed purchased GPO a little while ago. You might PM him and see what he thinks about GPO. Also, I don't know what they offer in terms of upgrading to higher quality packages.HTH,Dave

Johnny,I have both Gold and Gpo. I use Gold 90% of the time and Gpo 10% of the time (if that much).Basically I agree with most everybody else, wait til Soundsonline's next holiday sale (probably over the 4th of July weekend) and get Gold. It's not much more money and sonically in an entirely different league from Gpo (or Silver, for that matter).Unless a) your computer is underpowered and you're planning on writing big dense arrangements or b) you're planning on doing mostly chamber-music type cues. in which case Gold's built-in Hall ambience might be too much.As far as upgrade, there used to be some kind of path from Gpo to VSL, but you'd better check with both companies about the details and if it's still available.matto
