Heart this and Heart that is obviously the king.Slip away, slipped away etc.,Wings and flying,Hold me, hold you etc.Wrap me in your arms etc. These songwriters only know how to slip, hold, fly, wrap and have a heart. You won't see a real songwriter like Dylan engaging in any of that crap.A Dylan heart image? "Like a corkscrew to my heart." Hardly standard fare, folks.I will think of more of these cliches because I hate 'em all.

Quote:Heart this and Heart that is obviously the king.Slip away, slipped away etc.,Wings and flying,Hold me, hold you etc......I don't think one or two words count as a cliche, they're just building blocks of language...next thing you'll be telling me "and" is the most overused "cliche" in songwriting. To me there's a difference between overused imagery (such as the "spread wings learn to fly" idea) and actual cliche phrases (often including a rhyme) such as the one given by Ern above. The former are okay IMHO if they are perfectly set up and just "fit" in the lyric or especially if given a slight twist by lyrics preceding /following them. The latter...such as "come on baby, be my lady" or something to that effect...I would stay away from at ANY cost. The thing is, pop lyrics really have to be simple, direct and conversational, generally speaking. To maintain that without resorting to cliches and relying on overused imagery too much is the really hard part...matto[ btw @ shakabrah: Just try to be happy for her, you know? (I know I know, none of my biz...) ]
