I just can't help myself.. I love Robin Frederick! The last Taxi Ustream made me wanna track down the wall they wrote "EC is GOD" on, and change the initials to RF!!!

Every song she reviewed in this episode (with ML as a GREAT facilitator), I thought was killer, but Robin just took them apart and proved there could be added another dimension to them! To me, THAT was just brilliant, eye opening, terrifying, excellent.. well, pick your own vocabulary for it

Sorry to be so ridiculous, but I just find Robin's talks very helpful and inspiring. We should pay her to be a regular reviewer in the peer-to-peer section.. I mean it!!

i HAVE to agree. she did a review of one of my songs and i helped me out soooooooooo much.
i bought her book and am going through it, it is one of the best tools on my desk..........

RF is really the only one who embodies the "I've learned more from a three minute record, than I've ever learned in school" line for me! I love her analysis of contemporary songs, based on Tory Amos examples. That's soo brilliant!

I would think she's the only one who could write an authoritative book on song characteristics in every decade since Shakespeare I so look forward to her next one, which should be about recording/producing, I think I've read somewhere.. but I may be wrong..

Couldn't agree more with you guys, what she doesn't know is about songwriting, structures, and being in touch with what is current is nobodys business, here and now. soooo informative I just had to smile the whole time I watched it, mainly cos she wasn't taking one of my songs apart, only joking. Anyone who doesn't glean anything from this awe inspiring, highly motivating, joy of a woman who obviously lives for songwiting, wasn't paying attention..... Gotta love those live videos, they've all got something for sure.

Wow, thanks for this link, Magne. I was astonished to find that my song "Thought I'd Never Fall Again" was the first track Robin reviewed, and that she spoke about it at length. She was very complimentary and made some valuable suggestions about perhaps versioning up to a bit more contemporary mix. John

RF is indeed an incredible expert. I bought both of her books and I usually follow "her method" when I'm writing a song.

But I don't like what she wrote on Twitter:

"For those who've asked: No plans to release ebook of my songwriting book. I want ppl to write in the margins, keep w/ gtr or kybd! USE it!"

On the one hand, it sounds a bit conceited. On the other hand, although I've bought her books, I've written in the margins... I'd still love an ebook version because the book is just too big and heavy to carry around all day.

I've got to get that book!

In my opinion, you should read "Shortcuts to Hit Songwriting" first, it covers everything important.
In "Shortcuts to Songwriting for Film & TV" a lot of the same things are repeated, but some specific info about writing for film & tv is also added.
