Hi everybody,
I listened to this interview (DEFINITELY worth the watch if you write anything close to country). For those of you who just wanted the quick overview, I made notes for myself, which are posted below. Hope this helps! :) - Dave

Be totally honest, intimate from line 1
grab from the 1st 3 words
practice practice practice, study study, study
start reading (pick up on how to cut down length, solidify story)
gary chapman - look him up
looking for GREAT SONGS not just good songs
you are unique, have something to say, and people want to hear it, but how do you want to say it
less opportunities, bar is higher, but more opportunity to learn

art of the hook - curb appeal
needs that “oh my god” moment when listening, like when listening to The Band Perry's “If I Die Young”
play around with words/phrases/ideas in a fresh new way (rubics cube)
make an exercise with it
live with the hook - keep it in my head - still fresh after a few days - let a few people hear it and go from there - strive to be objective - marketing/business = money
“cut through”
“as naked as possible can be nice” - let them take ownership of it
could add a little solo before the bridge like in
Crank Up The Music - Alice Wilson
more unique - fewer cliches - sound more conversational
fresh lyrical approach
make sure pronouns are correct (why is that word that)
listen to Jason Aldean - “My Kind of Party”
“ 10- minute exercise
1isten minutes everything in connection with that object”
“WISHING DOWN THE BONES - BOOK”
“Lady Antebellum - Hello World”- visual imagery
“Brad Paisley “Raining You”
“Short Bus”
country people pull themselves up by the bootstraps - aren't into self pity
Conversational!!!
Not too mushy - needs balance
(Bright Hook, killer first line, lots of imagery, unique lyric concept, plug into trends of current radio)
Americana - Zac Brown Band/The Band Perry
Tell the STORY - tell a close friend your escapades (taylor swift)
