Sometimes you learn things at the rally that you already knew but you really needed to be hit over the head again with again...

For me, it has to do with re-examining my writing style to be much more film/TV oriented and less "the way I've always done it".

Some things I want to do this next year:

1. Write some songs based on a very universal hook line that gets repeated-- a line that can be interpreted to match a great many situations. And keep the verse detail much lighter on specific story elements and more on general emotions and body feelings.

2. Take some of my better songs and re-write them with collaborators, folks with more film/TV forwards and placements than myself, so as to keep the best, throw out the rest and make them much more film/TV-worthy.

I can't stress enough how much learning and re-learning there is at a rally. And very often the best comes out of relationships with your PEERS built by just hanging around and chatting in the lobby lounge area, at the bar, etc. There is no "on-line" substitute for that.

1) Chris Ronan Murphy's class on arranging, which I've seen several times in prior years is always a "must do' for me at the Rally. And again this year it was good (and probably necessary) for me to be reminded to be more aware of opportunities to be subtle, tasteful, smart, economical, relevant and "to the point" in my writing.

2) And the 5-year-plan session is another serious refresher on being persistent and more efficient with the business side of things. Thanks Dave, Matto & Mazz!!

3) Among the "...stuff I already knew..." was how great it is to re-connect with such a great and supporting group of friends in the Dot Lounge! Thanks all!

Ditto Casey!!! It was great meeting all the faces that are here on the forum. And you stated my goals exactly!

Ditto on the need to be hit over the head from time to time..... a caveman's realignment if you will.
I've already goals for the next year I'm very excited about.....

Ronan Chris Murphy reinforced so much that I already knew, but I learned one really crucial new thing, (about tilting a mic downward to deal with a singer's plosives, instead of sideways) and also a great deal about presentation while teaching. He refused to let anyone draw him off-topic, and engaged his listeners with dynamic body language.
