Mr Dave's 2008 Rally Awards

These awards are just random thoughts and are focused on the "new" people I met this year at the Rally. I didn't have a chance to really talk with everyone so it's not anything to do with anything... just my impressions of the people I did have a chance to talk to. So, drum roll please...The "Shirts You Can See From Outer Space" award goes to OttLuck. I might get me one of those. Nice guy and I'm glad to have met him.The "Guy I Wanted To Talk To But Didn't Get Much Of A Chance To" award goes to Tom Aragon. It was like a time warp where he was everyplace I wasn't. Maybe it was his cosmic dot that threw the space-time continuum out of whack. I did hear a great story though but I can't remember how it ended. All I know is that after Raags told me the part about Tom making a suggestion to someone else about "rimming somebody's peephole" (you know, like on the hotel door) I collapsed in laughter and pretty much blacked out after that. The "I Knew She Was Going To Be A Riot But Wasn't Quite Expecting How Much Of A Riot She Was Actually Going To Be" award goes to Raags. This is pretty much a unanimous consensus amongst the other Rally attendees so it's not just me.The "Overcame Her Shyness" award goes to Adrienne. Wow... anyone that can post pre-Rally "How do I talk to people" and come away post-Rally having placed her music directly into the hands of Nashville's top song plugger wins that award and my admiration. As an aside, I was going to post that she also wins the "She's So Cute You Just Want To Pick Her Up, Pinch And Tickle Her All At The Same Time" award but if I did that she'd be embarrassed because there would be thousands, maybe tens of thousands of people that would read that. So I won't embarrass her by posting that award. The "Surprise Visit" award goes to Ern. How good was that to see him? Dropping into the "Dot Lounge" at the hotel was awesome! Good thinking Ern. The "Guy Who Takes The Most Notes I've Even Seen" award goes to AllenDS, formerly the vague and misunderstood "allends". In a timespan of maybe 20 minutes in one session I know he covered at least three pages. For the whole Rally I'm guessing he had to ship everything back by freight train. My note taking was pretty pathetic by comparison. "More Cowbell" was about all I managed as an idea I got from a Driver's Ed session. The "Coolest Chick I've Ever Met" award easily... EASILY goes to Vicky The Bass Player. I always tried to stay within a 200 yard radius of wherever she was just to improve my image and coolness factor. This was also a consensus as the most oft-heard comment was "Is she cool or what?". Actually the most oft-heard thing regarding Vicky was when she introduced herself. She only said "Hi I'm Vicky" and every single response was "THE BASS PLAYER???!!!".The "They Could Have Sold Empty Boxes" award goes to the "Microphone Babes". If you were there... no explanation necessary. The "I'm Just The Husband... I'm Staying Out Of This" award goes to Grant Green, husband of our own jazz-guitar playing ChristiG. Next year we'll pull Grant into the frey full steam so tell him to get prepared ahead of time. The "My Newest Bestest Friend" award goes to Big Blueberry (aka Big Blue aka Big). He's a big guy if you haven't guessed. Chance circumstances bring about the most interesting meetings and he and I had a chance to talk post-dinner the last night as we were the only two left hanging around the table. Congrats on the new Taxi deal Mr Big! The "I'm Sure Glad I Met Him" award goes to JazzStan. He's a jazz master as well as a great guy. We have lots in common including the fact that his mom lives in Cape Girardeau of all places. The "I Didn't Know He Was On All Those Panels And Has All Those Credits" award goes to DeanKripp. He's not a bragger that's for sure. After a little open-ended small talk, things trickle out like "I've got 50,000 placements on TV", stuff like that. Anyone wanting any real world advice about the music business and the work schedule that is needed to do this kind of thing would do well to get his take on things (to say the least). And finally... althought he's not "new", I give the final award, the "We Always Take A Great Picture Together" award to Weapon (aka Mr Kelly). I offer this into evidence and rest my case...Great meeing old friends and making new friends!Dave

Glad we could spend some time at El Matador Beach and cruising PCH and the canyons. You are now officially known as "Malibu Dave," and all the ladies want a Malibu Dave doll to cuddle up with at night! I'm planning on selling copies of my notes for $10.00 per page.Cheers,Allen<kidding>

Sorry we had to chase away the amorous couple away from their little alcove in the rocks --- at least they had their clothes on --- when they got up to leave! Ern

Good thing you thought better of it. Trent

I'm somehow recalling an event on the last night with an ipod being passed around the restaurant. Yep, it's good to know you'd NEVER embarrass me! What are you, 2 for 2 now? lol!I'm trying to figure out what is worse...the fear of attending the rally or being picked up, pinched and tickled? I think it's a pretty close race between the two! Seriously though, it was great hanging out with you and chatting up a storm! Thanks for thinking I wasn't shy, even when I totally felt it! And I guess there are worse things I could be called besides cute, so I'll take the award! I'd like to thank my family, the dots, all my fans.... Oh sorry, I thought I was at the Grammy's for a second!

That would be the Davey's I think acceptance speeches are more than acceptable - but it's not my awards show to say.

Dave:It was a true pleasure meeting you!I really wanted to get a chance to talk, but you are so popular!!!! There was always a group around you and I didn't want to interrupt. The same goes with many Dots I wanted to talk to......................You folks are REALLY popular....There just wasn't enough time to shmooze properly...Next year I'll be more diligent in introducing myself and getting to know more Dots. My wife and I really enjoyed the whole event and we'll definitely be back for more!
