I'm posting this mostly 'cause I want to put my own money where my mouth is.PLEASE consider joining me in purchasing carbon offsets to compensate for all the travel to and from the Rally. My niece just got married, and they spent their honeymoon in Bora Bora (!). I wanted to give a wedding present that would matter to THEIR children. So, I went to www.carbonfund.org (a non-profit company with a proven track-record) and bought them the offsets to cover their flights to the tropics. For the both of them, traveling THAT many miles, it cost me less than $50.for the vast majority of us traveling to the Rally, we could help make a difference to our planet in peril and take us one step closer to stabilizing global warming (...and you get to specify where your money goes, whether it's to alternative energy sources and research or to reforestation...) for about $20 extra. Please, please... Take a few minutes and check out their website. It will amaze you. If I knew how to post a link here, I would.thanks for even taking the time to read this, y'all.this tiny little blue ball is ALL we've got...Ted

Great idea Ted. Vikki - Trains and buses "depend". Trains leave a smaller footprint under most conditions because they replace so many trucks, busses, and cars for the same distance of travel.Busses carry more people than cars do, so as long as there are more than 5 passengers (one car load) yes, your reducing your footprint. And Squids, don't stop breathing just yet!!At least, just grow yourself some nice houseplants or plant a tree somewhere to offset your footprint!

On their website, you can calculate (and subsequently offset) your footprint for ANY type of travel/transportation. And for your hotel stay. And your rental car... You can get as detailed as you can afford.Do check out their site. It's well put together, easy to navigate, and incredibly informative.

Squiddie, Even if you can't plant a tree, I still don't want you to stop breathing. OK?SO glad you'll be at the Rally this year.

Ted,I'll be checking this out, you're not the only one, don't worry!!!! In Ithaca where I live there are lots of bicycles, and my husband and I just moved downtown so that we could walk everywhere just about, instead of living in the country and having to commute 5-6 miles downtown multiple times per day. Here, buses are not really an option yet because their schedules are so limited, but foot and bicycles really work great. There are bicycle trails and some lanes, and even built-for-2 and -4 bicycles that I've seen in use. We went from 3 cars for 3 adults to 1 car that we share, and Ithaca now has a Car Share program, too, that has a light truck parked 2 blocks from our house. It is amazing. About every day we think/brainstorm about more we can do... Perhaps by example is the best way, for me, anyway.--Mer
