Open mic question ---

Could not find an answer so I thought I would ask here.
I saw a guy on youtube using a "backing track" for his performance on Open Mic Night at the Road Rally. Is that allowed? If so, I would like to do the same. Thanks for any response.

Good question, and I was wondering kind of the same thing...
Would like to use a loop pedal and also wondering if duos are allowed/okay?
A fellow Taxi member and cowriter of mine would like to do open mic as a duo if possible.
If anyone could weigh in on open mic policies I'd appreciate it!

Can any of the veterans provide some more detail around the open mic sessions? Is it a signup list like some karaoke bars do, is it a cattle call, or somewhere in between? Just for singers and guitar players, or will there be an actual band present with a sound system?

The Open Mic sessions provide one acoustic guitar, one keyboard and multiple mics. (and a sound system) You can use your own instrument. Playing a backing track has been done, but to be on the safe side, provide the player (your phone, CD player, MP3 player, etc)
There will be a host, a mix engineer and a stage hand.
The way it works is that a sign-up sheet is posted (at a certain time) the day of the Open Mic session outside the door where it will be held. The performers are first-come first-served (and I believe it is in order of who is on the sheet.)

Edit: Provide your own backup singers/instrumentalists (and make sure they have charts)

Oh okay. I didn't know using a backing track was an option, I thought it all had to be live.

Most people 'play' during their performance, but I have seen some use a backing track. The ballroom probably has more options as far as tech assistance, but to be safe, bring not only your player but the appropriate cord/jacks, too. Duos and combos happen too, but - DO NOT take forever to set up.
Sign up line is shortest on Thursday, and can be as much as a two hour wait for Fri / Sat.
