OK I think this will be my last question, just wanna be prepared and get the most out of my first.

The 1 on 1 mentoring, I understand it is somewhat up in the air until the day of and to choose 4 or 5 possibles.

My question is will we be assigned a specific time slot so we can attend a breakout session and duck out for 15 minutes and go back in? OR do we have to sit in a room for a while waiting for our turn and not be able to attend some smaller classes?

You're given a specific time, if you get through registration soon enough you will have a choice of times for that person

OK cool, I was hoping for that. So I imagine then that leaving a class for a few and then returning is totally fine and not considered rude, right?

well actually, I have my day planned out in advance so when I get my mentor appointment I try for a time that won't conflict. If it does, then I'd stay at the back of the class and slip out quietly, whether you can get back in depends on space.

If this was a conference of doctors and lawyers then you'd need to stay put no matter what. But... this being a music thing, the "rules" are greatly relaxed. Obviously everyone tries to be polite and quiet but you'll see people coming and going at all different times.

Yeah it's fine to leave and come back...it's easier to do in a panel since the ballroom is so big. If it's during a class, make sure you sit in the back near the door so you're not disrupting the whole thing...and of course most likely somebody will be sitting in 'your' seat by the time you get back if it's a full class...so you may have to stand for the remainder...

No Mikey... Dave and Matto are both wrong. If you leave ANY class, at any time during the whole 4-day event... you will be singled out and asked to quickly orchestrate an 8-bar section for a 70-piece orchestra. You will have 5 minutes to do so. Then you will be asked to describe the difference between a "modern" and a French Oboe. You will have another 5 minutes.

You will then be asked to provide the instructor with an imported ale of his/her choice...

My advice would be to sit in the front of the class and hum quiet melodies so the instructor realizes that you are a focused and determined composer. If there's no initial reaction... be sure to hum louder and louder until you receive the desired response.

I've always had to duck out for a mentor session, and as Matto said, it's fine to do that. You'll see others doing it too-- there's a lot happening all at once at the Rally, and it's just a matter of showing up a few minutes early to be on time for your session! Mentor sessions go quickly, so have your questions or FB requests ready to go. (And if you bring a burned CD-- check it beforehand to make sure it will play okay for you during the session.)

There is talk that if you duck out of a class early, you get stripped of your dot and forever shunned.

Seriously, don't sweat it... People sit in the back and duck out if they have to. One thing about the rally is there are always parallel things going on (as you noted in another post).
