First of all, congratulations Ted - that is great news - I really enjoyed listening to them when you first posted them.I hope you don't mind me asking this here but it is a very general question that your post has brought up in my mind. It's regarding your sentence:- "And to make this opportunity available to all of us, we decided to split the songwriting credits on all three of them into (3) equal parts...."As I haven't been involved in T.V/Film or collaborations - I'm wondering how this works? Please understand I just want to understand this generally. I know that if the recording was a work for hire - the songwriter keeps all the rights etc... but using the example above - if 3 people are named as the songwriters for this opportunity, surely those 3 names have to go down as the creators of that song wherever? (the US copyright office etc...) ie: if an artist comes along and whats to "cover" one of these songs - then that royalty would have to be split to the 3 writers? Again please understand that I'm really wanting to understand this topic and not question your decisions Ted! In my mind you wrote the song and your friends helped perform it (that's the scenario I am trying to create anyway) - so I see you as the songwriter and all 3 of you as input to this particular sound recording and you would like to reward them. Can there not be a contract between the songwriter and all other parties involved for that particular sound recording saying if any revenue is generated from that sound recording etc.......? On the same "cover" idea.....if you wanted to re-record this song next year in a rock style....with new musicians who you also wanted to reward......Sorry if this is confusing and I have lost the plot but it's not clear at all. I'm thrilled about these getting forwarded.THEN, Rachel, let me clarify and maybe it will help.When I wrote "Never", there were a couple of spots in the lyrics I wasn't sure about. So, when Dwayne, Chris and I got together to hear what we had come up with, I asked them to help me solidify those spots. It was sorta like our own "Mad Libs" session. They helped me fill in the blanks with two lines (about 10-15 words, total). And I offered to give the two of them 25% of the songwriting credits, to split between them, for the help. They jumped at it. When Dwayne brought in "I'm Ready" and "Love Me, Baby", he was in the same place, and we had the same agreement when they were done/finished.I own the copyright (out right) to "Never", but I had no way of knowing if Dwayne had copyrighted either of his two songs. (And it's worth noting that the break-up of our acapella group was bitter and ugly, but I've never doubted the quality of the songs we wrote together.)When I saw this listing, I thought the best way to get the rest of the guys to cooperate (and give all THREE of these tunes a chance to make some money) was to offer Dwayne and Chris an equal share of songwriter credits, in the hopes Dwayne would make the same offer for his other two songs. It worked, and now EVERYBODY has the chance to make some money, instead of NOBODY making a dime.I have NO way of really knowing if that helps, at all. I just figure it's better to share the wealth than to continue bickering and never get any of those songs in the pipeline.Let me know if you need more detail or if I've totally missed your question altogether...
