My third forward - Is 15% a decent forward percentage??????

I had a Tension cue forward today. Over all I've submitted 20 cues and got 3 forwards, for a 15% success rate. Is that good, OK, decent or lousy as far as percentages go? Any feedback would really be appreciated.

I think everyone has their own bar of success, but what I've heard is if you are getting 10% forwarded you are doing ok. I'm at around 28%, some folks are much higher, others haven't had many forwards at all.

I guess it depends on how you're looking at it. I don't know how long you've been a member but I would think that's pretty good %, especially if that's for this year alone.

I was looking at my stats, been a member for 5 yrs, have submitted for 23 listings ( waiting to hear back from one ), got 6 forwards which puts me @ 27% (if I did the math right) for the 5 yr period. This year I've submitted to 3 listings so far - I've been slow but picking up... - (again, waiting on results of one) and have gotten 2 forwards. Now that would put me at 67% for this year? (again my math could be fuzzy, lol). Now, how many songs do you submit at a time? One listing I sent 2 songs & both were forwarded, another I sent 2 and one was kicked. So again I guess it depends on how you look at it. But I say you doing alright.

Thank you Paulie and DT. I truly do appreciate your replies. As a rock musician who's been around for a while, I am having a little difficulty revamping my thought patterns to fit into this TV Cue stuff. I want to do it all, but I know I need to stick to what I am more familiar with. It is just so tempting to try all the different listings. Hopefully I can get good at, at least, a few different genres and begin to see some forward movement, like a library or two or a supervisor or two offering a deal of some kind. Do you know what I mean? Anyway, I sure thank you for your input. I've heard some of your material, and you both have the chops for success. Good luck to you in your endeavors. Hope to meet you at the next Road Rally.

OH DT,

I forgot, I usually submit one or two at a time. I haven't built up a stock pile yet. Working on it tho ;)

its sort of relative....

if you have 10% forward and submit twice a year you probably aren't getting enough density of submissions to make things happen.

But if you submit 100 times and get 10 forwards in a year, then things are looking good to getting a few deals. Speaking from personal experience.

What you will likely find is that % is going to rise as you get more adept in tailoring what you do to the listings, and nailing the specifics of the briefs. I would expect its going to be more like 30-50% before long.

great track btw.

Good luck!

Thank you Andy. I really appreciate your input. I have heard some of your material and you seem to have it "going on" as they say. I have high hopes of creating a decent retirement income from my music thru Taxi. And I am of the same opinion as you on the "numbers game" theory. I am trying to submit as many as possible, no slowing down. And I learn daily from others here, so maybe soon my targeting for the listings will improve. Hope to meet you at the next Road Rally.

Mike,

Congrats on the forward, dude! 15% is totally fine, BUT..... don't get bogged down in percentages. Just do your very best to improve your craft. Now I realize how hard that can be when it comes to unfamiliar musical territory; I am also a total stranger to writing TV cues and underscore. But cliche or not, practice does indeed make perfect. :)

For me, I decided that every single day I'm gonna sit down for an hour and work on something in the tension-based instrumental genre. I figured I might as well pick one specific style and focus in on what makes those kinds of cues succeed. I research (listen) to as many similar cues as I can, and I read forums and ask questions. Then I attempt to put it all together. Day by day I hear myself getting better.

Anyway, good luck out there. :D

Nice cue, Mike! You've got your big trailer drums working. And the build feels great.

I think Andy's reply about density of submissions is very wise. As a relative newbie, I'm feeling a positive progression. The more I submit, the more I feel like I'm getting "in the zone." I'm thinking better about exactly what is being asked for, and how (or whether) I can provide that. And increasingly the answer is, maybe I can.
