The Listing:BLUES ROCK/AMERICANA/BLUEGRASS SONGS a la Sheryl Crow, Alison Krauss, etc. are sought by a female artist working on her second album with a multi-Grammy nominated producer. She is an Austin, TX based singer who will record your songs in Los Angeles. She is looking for accessible but original songs and asks that you avoid the tried and true lyrics. Looking more for radio singles rather than just cuts for the album. TAXI #S090410AMI submitted, I've Never Been "Pretty" Beforehttp://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_id=1346 ... trueThanks TAXI - fingers crossed!DerekLYRICS:I’ve Never Been "Pretty" BeforeThis might be easier if you’d mistreatedBut you never raised your voice to me or sworeI know that you think we’ve been doing alrightAnd you’re confused to see my things here by the doorI’m not running to the arms of anotherBut another’s kind words made me exploreA different kind of need; Sweetheart you’ve been good to meBut, I’ve never been “pretty” beforeI can’t explain the power in his simple commentBut it unlocked a part of me I can’t ignoreI’ve been loved and supported, needed and moreBut I’ve never been “pretty” beforeI made dinner. It’s on the table, if you can eat itI know you lose your appetite when you’re upsetAnd call your mom tomorrow night, it’s her birthdayI wrote it down beside the phone if you forgetTo tell the truth, I’ve thought about this for awhile nowBut when I pulled the first few things out of the drawerA weight just fell away. Honey all I know to say,Is, I’ve never been “pretty” beforeI can’t explain the power in his simple commentBut it unlocked a part of me I can’t ignoreI’ve been loved and supported, needed and moreBut I’ve never been “pretty” beforeI’ve been loved and supported, needed and moreBut I’ve never been “pretty” before.Derek McFarland © 2008

Derek,Congrats. I think this is an absolutely GREAT lyric!!! I love the conversational change of pace in the middle of the lyric .. this partI made dinner. It’s on the table, if you can eat itI know you lose your appetite when you’re upsetAnd call your mom tomorrow night, it’s her birthdayI wrote it down beside the phone if you forgetIt makes the whole song seem so conversational, so real, so perfect.Dean

Thanks for all the feedback guys! You know one thing I have noticed (and kinda worries me) is that men seem to like the lyrics of this song more than women do. My wife and one of my music (girl) friends did not care for it so much.I'm happy that it got forwarded, but maybe I had a guy screener and the artist is gonna hate it Derek

Derek,Well I think the lyrics are awesome, but then I'm a guy. I think you're more likely to get rejected because the song doesn't fit the style of the referenced artists. This is a very good song, and it's definitely right for the Patsy Cline listing, but I gotta wonder how this fits Alison Krause or Sheryl Crow? I've had two country forwards, both times on the same song, and that song also got picked as a Taxi Favorite. I'm grateful for that, but it's perhaps my LEAST commercial country song because it's about drinking (not in vogue in Nashville now) it's negative and it's an old fashioned sounding tune. Meanwhile my most commercial country song got returned by Taxi more than ten times, yet the first time I pitched it to a publisher in Nashville (albeit a small indie publisher) it got signed. I gotta wonder if the L.A.-based Taxi screeners have any idea what's current in Nashville. Nevertheless, any forward is a good thing around here, and the song definitely has legs.Cam

Cam, you make a good point and I don't disagree. In this case, I believe the producer was the screener. He made some nice comments in the review and said he would see if the artist had the same emotional connection with the song.Derek
