Watch It

I can never wait until they're done before I post these things...but then again, it's easier to change things before it's done. Here's some white funk...still needs stuff like better drumbeats and some instrumentation in the middle bit, but you get the idea. Haven't gotten serious about the mix yet, still laying down the tracks. Any comments or advice would be most welcome.http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7284641Watch ItAfter I've been working like a dog all dayI got something that I love to doStick to the wall like a flyUntil my lady comes byIt feels like a dream come trueAnd here she comes, here she comesI got to keep my sunglasses onAnd there she goes, there she goes, againOh I don't careI'm gonna watch itWatch it every dayI don't care if it's right or wrongI'm gonna watch it anywayWatch it, watch itYou know what I sayI don't care if it's right or wrongI'm gonna watch it anywayAfter I've been working like a dog all dayI got something that I love to doI hit the bus stop, sit on downI watch and wait and at 5:08It feels like a dream come trueAnd here she comes, here she comesI got to keep my sunglasses onAnd there she goes, there she goes, againOh I don't careI'm gonna watch itWatch it every dayI don't care if it's right or wrongI'm gonna watch it anywayWatch it, watch itYou know what I sayI don't care if it's right or wrongI'm gonna watch it anywayCopyright 2009 by Mark Kaufman

Fantastic as always Mark! So much funkiness here....How about that organ sound from "Superstition" type thing in here? Might sound cool with this genre....Macemanps. Listened to nowhere man as well- just so cool- one of my favourites!

Thanks Maceman! Yes, a clav sound has been on my mind, maybe for a few little spots between lyrics. I'll also play some sort of crazy sounding instrument for a solo...either a nasty, bloated synth or some distorted guitar with an octave pedal. Thanks for the kind words!

Cool tune, Mark. You don't hear much stuff like this anymore unless you go looking for it. The chorus is pretty hooky, in a funky way.Based on your opening statement, it sounds like you hired out the rhythm section for this. My concern here is the basic instruments--drum, bass, guitar--don't seem to be in a good pocket all the time, as you'd expect in a song like this. If you have the individual tracks, I'd solo those 3 two-at-a-time to judge what's not quite working.Other thing I heard is the pre-chorus sounds a bit ambiguous harmonically and/or dissonant. That may be intended as it builds up considerable tension before the chorus releases. Just might be a little too much.Congrats on tackling this genre!Vince

Thanks Vince! No I didn't hire anyone. I think I need to replace some--well, most--of the drum patterns I programmed...I'm pretty sure that's the main source of that lost pocket. And I still need to tighten up the bass licks.I'll think on that pre-chorus...it's pretty much what I wanted, but I'll look into it for sure.Much appreciated!-Mark

That is some funkified groove, there. Love it. I could definitely hear a nice compin' B4. It's a long shot, but you don't know the Tower of Power horn section, do you? If so, I'd have Lenny Pickett head over and lay down some screamin' sax somewhere.Anyways, great stuff. It brightened my otherwise dull afternoon.Best wishes.

Hey Mark . . . this could shape up as a replacement tune for either/both "I Wanna Thank You" by Sly and "Play That Funky Music". Just get some better (funkier) drums going and work on it a bit & this could be cool. I get what Vince is saying about the pre-chorus. It's a little jolting at first but I think it might be one of those things that could grow on you.

Hi Mark,I've always wondered what the hell I could do with all those funky guitar and drum loops I have to sort through to get to the one I always seem to be looking for. I can't really add anything to what's already been said, i.e. the groove is not quite there yet. The pre-chorus didn't bother me, except maybe the very first time I heard it I wondered where it was going, but thereafter it seemed to flow fine. Play that funky music white boy....Cam

This is great. I think your right about tightening up the drums though. It sounds really good though. What kind of mic do you use for vocals? Your voice is really nice and present.

Thanks Tim, Bill, Cam and Diogenes!Definitely going to replace the drums with some funk loops, but time is beginning to revolt against me. Why can't the world understand that I'd rather be effing around with my music? Huh??What's more, I'm taking the FAWM challenge, so I'll be busier writing 14 songs than tweaking production. Fun times.Diogenes, I'm singing into that new Gauge ECM-87...check out the thread by that title in the Tech Section. It's an excellent mic for $149.
