Wrds, you're a prolific bugger ain't ya?Have to say that I enjoyed this, but the first thing which seemed to me to disagree with the blues was the brightness of the vocals. And they are sort of at diva level.I do like the growl you use in the voice, but I would've saved it for the latter third of the song, like a little burst of emphasis when it's needed. The delivery of the line "hit the spot!" does actually hit the spot.Traditional arrangement works fine, nothing unexpected, backing vocals are a bit hesitant, sparse and experimental, but then that could represent a relunctance of an egoless bass player or sunnit.

I'm stalking zing ....and bumping this to page 1 ...cus W's a noobie and we gotta stick together ....but that doesn't alter my reviewing style ....very clean and talented guitarist. like the stereo imaging of the various axes and nice job of eq on them to keep them seperate as well. some pretty decent licks on lead as well .... standard blues stuff but hey, you dance with who brung ya and ya might as well dance with your pants down right?tho to be sure, had it been me producing this, I'd given that lead a big tube sound and blown it over the top instead of going sweet strat clean and pure ...bass is ... eyup ... jus about right ... no complaints ... no big runs that coulda stepped up but the walks were good. and I could feel it as well as hear it and that's always good. drums ... well, that's a weak spot for me on this ... and not how's it's rep'd out in style but more it's sound. it's mostly hihat ... huh? since when did that become the prominent voice on a kit?bring that damn snare up and for that matter, vary it up just a bit with some nano-second delays on the hit, and maybe some verb on the snare too ... and on that kick ... I got no thumping in my bones from that lemme tell ya ... that tight a top and you might as well just double bass through the song man ... gimme some balls willya?vocals are pretty good ... decent tone, timber and grit ... a bit too much slapback FX when I think maybe just a well saturated tight room verb would work better but all in all, it's about what I'd expect for a simple blues rock vocal ... fact is tho, it's too hot in this mix but once you straighten out the drum mix, it might sit right in there the way it should as is.words are blues simple ... a bit too cluttered a few times but not bad and at least you've got the form right.all in all, this is decent as hell. a good album filler. not a great album filler and as far as it being in the top anything for blues ... it won't be ... tho amazingly, I do think I've heard a lot worse pieces placed into slots in movies, ads, etc that are a lot more generic and so so than this one.but you obviously aren't building the next big thing and so to stand out, you need something unique in other ways - or just flat out incredibly performed and sorry man, this ain't fitting that bill ...but hey, it didn't piss me off listening to it and to be honest, that's happened plenty of times in this specific genre. so really, I guess it's all right.but needs a lot of work to get it to prime time.

Geoff,You got some great comments from zing and cj. I think the overall sound is too "studio" for this type of song; since it sounds like a bar song to me, it should sound like a bar band (and could be used in a TV/film scene that way). Here's another approach you could take: Do an alternate mix of the whole song with less stereo separation and use a room reverb sound on the whole thing. Make it sound like it was done live.If I read your post correctly, you're submitting to a listing that is looking for songs, so the sound shouldn't matter in theory--the artist would re-record your song.Vince

HeyGota agree with Geoff.. guitars are too clean and too much stereo action going on. Needs to sound a bit more "down home"You could also make the shuffle swing harder by letting them low open strings ring more... listen to some Jimmy Reed or Hound Dog Taylor .. not contemporary by any stretch but those guys were the masters of that style.I played for a while with a blues guy who was a good friend of Stevie Ray Vaughan and played with some heavy blues names... he taught me the best way to get that shuffle feel is to use your thumb... some people like a thumb pick... check Freddie King in this video.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7h9OOSYy0VM(around 6 mins in you can see he's using his thumb and fingers).. that way you can throw in those high notes to keep that groove rolling along. hhmmm good shid!good luck manD

I dislike the tight double/delay on the vocal, you don't hear that in a blues club. I think a more 'live' feel would help the cause. The vocal lacks confidence and the execution could be better, but that's mostly immaterial if this is a song submission. I like the arrangement and the guitar work, though some of the rhythm guitars are a little too distorted, pushing the track in more of a blues rock direction, though I agree the lead guitar could use a little more hair on it. I believe a blues tune needs lyrics that are way better than just ok, cuz you're often dealing with fairly standard progressions and even arrangements; something's got to stand out. Clever wordplay can help. Check out Charley And The Nitecats or Lil' Ed And The Blues Imperials for inspiration.

<gulp> thanks to everyone for these comments:zing for noticing in the 1st placecj for bouncing the song back to the top of the list (thank you brutha!)idea/david/mojo/road for insightful (if contradictory) remarks.these are much appreciated, and really made me think. all the sound-quality-oriented notes in particular were well-taken...that's the area I need to up my game on. I'm recording on a boss multitrack and still am feeling my way when it comes to mix levels, placement, and eq issues....(appreciate the kind words about my guitar-ing too)I agree that it kinda straddles blues & blues-rock, and isn't as hard-hitting and clear-cut as it could be. and it's evident that nobody liked the slap-back echo on the vocal. I tell ya, between these notes and listening to other tracks being posted on here, it's REALLY teaching me a lot. with each track I record I learn something new, and reading all these comments, I nod my head and think "oh! that's something I hadn't considered"....
