One True Thing - New version
This one goes in a new direction, for me at least. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6959884One True ThingSalesman came on my TVWith a new brand of justiceHe said everything’s changed, nothing’s the sameYou’ll just have to trust usIf you think with your heart they tear you apartIt’s a dangerous warEvery man that we find will be guiltyWe can’t let them speak anymoreIs there one true thing in all the tales you tell me?One true thing, could be anything, in all that you say?One true thing in all the words you've spokenIs there a promise unbroken? One true thing that you can tell me todayBefore we take you away? One thing I knowEvery man has a storyWe can cover our fearsIn a blanket of gloryThere is always a love to be foundStill you say it isn’t soWill you answer one question before you go?Is there one true thing in all the tales you tell me?One true thing, anything, in all that you say?One true thing in all the words you've spokenOne promise unbroken? One true thing you can tell me todayBefore we take you away?So I wandered for yearsOn a carpet of liesThrough the walls of the prisonsHear the screams and the criesListen to me, listen to meWon’t you listen to meIf we lock our own souls into cagesHow can we be free?Is there one true thing in all the tales you tell me?One true thing, anything, in all that you say?One true thing in all the words you've spokenOne promise unbroken? One true thing you can tell me todayBefore we take you away?(Copyright 2008 by Mark Kaufman)

Re: One True Thing
Nie groove. Sounds like a novelty song. I think there's way too much reverb on the vocals, I can't make out the words very well - makes it a bit muddy. I like the music, but I think there should be a change of groove between verse & chorus... not that the music isn't different, but seems to lag just a little, I'd sing the whole thing at least 10 bpm faster, and think of how you can make the chorus punchier. A faster speed will force you to edit your lines a little more. Good start

Re: One True Thing
Yah Mon!!! Very cool old school Marley vide!!!! Bravo!!!!Couple of small points on the Chank rhythm guitar... need give it some more umph!.... should be a sharp almost percusive sound... touch of distortion... natural amp stuff not the metal fuzz.... on the transition to the chorus (last two lines of the verse) drop it out and do the chords like the other guitar... it's a common thing Tosh used to do with the Wailers.... it helps the chorus stand out...I might say a touch slow but Marley did that but filled the space with vocals, scat etc.... you're close here ... maybe a little more and the speed will be fine as is...Thanks Mark... really enjoyed the listen.... you did a great job here...Salutations in the name of the most high, Jah Rastafari!!!Peace, Geo

Re: One True Thing
Turn the delay on the vox down %50.When the chorus kicks in, make the kik drum pattern 4 on the floor (all 4, 1/4 notes every bar) and then change back for the verses. Stevie Wonder does this in Master Blaster, tho the fast kik happens in the "head"this is very cool man, you sure are talented!

Re: One True Thing
God, I love this place. Vikki - Yes, I will back down the delay on the vocal, too much. Not sure what you mean by novelty song...I usually think of that as comedy. I will add some spice to the chorus, some extra cymbal and percussion and kick...and then I hope the tempo will work, otherwise it's back to square one again. And the lyrics were written in haste today, so a rewrite is definitely in order...no one knows who is who in this song yet. THANK YOU! Geo my brudda mahn, Jah love, JAHHHH love! I will definitely give a shot to your advice on the chank guitar...this whole thing has been a learning experience. I've always loved Marley and never tried this sort of thing, but oddly enough it was listening to some Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros that inspired me to try a reggae tune. I may doubling some guitar to the bassline on that main riff too, and see if a little clav sounds right for this. This whole thing just sort of spewed out last night and this morning...now it's time to beat it into shape. Thank you! I and I thank you!Steve - Yes! Less delay and I will add that bass kick to the chorus, and some crispy cymbal sounds too. This time I used wav files from Drums from the Big Room instead of EZ Drummer...different to work with, but I like the sound. Also used a free VST for the B3 sound called the Organized Trio. Thanks for the compliment, checks in the mail! -Mark

Mark,You know you are one of my favorites here. You have such versatility in many styles... in the writing, and the playing, as well as the recording production.

Re: One True Thing
Thanks Bill - You're right...I backed it off. Thanks Glenn - That's very kind of you to say. I prefer to call it Musical A.D.D. Never being able to settle on a genre is handy for TAXI...but I'd never make it on my own---there's no appropriate bin at the record store... Damn straight, Geo!Warren, I'd love to know if your daughter likes this one or if it's too old school... Thank you!I took a lot of advice here and the new musical changes are posted. Next stop is the lyrics...I'll make the points of reference clearer since we don't really know who is saying what yet. Thanks for all the help! -mk
