Blues Instrumental?

Post by billg » Tue Oct 07, 2008 4:47 am

Would you guys call this blues? It's called "Brother From Another Planet" http://www.billgaunce.com/song/92In particular, do you think it works for this? I'm starting to 2nd guess everything.A VARIETY OF BLUES SONGS AND INSTRUMENTALS in all styles including Rural, Urban, Delta, Contemporary, Electric, Acoustic, etc. are needed by an established Production Music Library/Publisher for various Film/TV placements. All tempos will be considered and male or female vocals will be just fine. If your song has vocals, all lyrics should be universal enough as to apply to many different scenarios and usages. Excellent performances are a must, as always, and Broadcast Quality is necessary for this one. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received by October 14, 2008. TAXI #S081014BL

Hey Bill! It's a quirky blues piece, that's for sure (doesn't fit the "standard" blues feel)... but it IS blues. I have no idea whether this will get a forward or not, but it does stand out from the rest... so it just might! You might want to contact taxi and ask them if quirkier blues pieces might still fit with this particular listing just to be on the safe side before you throw down a nickel on it.Cheers!

Quote:Would you guys call this blues?hmmmm....I think you might be able to get away with this song on this listing if you fix some mix stuff (I'd like to hear this sound more organic)....I hate to say....I think the bass is just a little too loud....when the other instruments start layering in the balance is getting skewed....also it's more musical for the rhythm section instruments to come down in volume when others are starting....like a live band does when the verse starts up for example....since the bass and drums are really driving the song, it would be cool to give them variation and rhythmic breaks...there are small pocket issues in the melodic figures, but I think it's OK for film and TV....hope this helpscool song...vtbp

....went back and re-read the listing......you may need a more definite melody.....I've noticed that instrumental listings that are also considering vocals, tend to do better with clear melody....you bordering with an underscore vibe....hope I'm not too tough on you, vtbp

yep, blues to me too,on first listen, i dig the bass, but it sounds a bit mufffled to me...though the line's damned good. you also have a synth thing/bell thing way way way back there that on 2nd listen i hear--i'd actually bring that out in the mix more...only other thing i might do (a big might BTW) is start the harp earlier, and use variety musically with THAT. if that's you playing it bud, you can obviously vary it a bit more melodically, but i get what vtbp is saying--it might just be a style thing... but very nice job IMHO.all the best, warren, who knows the blues nada...so take it with a grain...

Thanks everyone. This was a cobbled remnants from a vocal blues song I did a while back & unfortunately don't have the files anymore (long story) so all I can do are global tweaks. The vocal version got a really good critique from a screener (8 & 9's) and awesome comments . . . I can't use that version because the lyrics are NOT universal by any stretch. Anyway, it's submitted . . . there goes another fiver.
